I use one, I like the transom not cracked/ripped off on my boat. I do not know if there is a better spot on the motor to pout it or not, I jsut put it just below the fin that has the trim tab on it, might not be right, but it works for me.
I dont pull my boat without one
A must have with bigger motors. Mine is tilt and trim and i have one that fits in the holes on the engine plate and is only about 12 inches long.Works great and is easy to store.
My previous boat did not have tilt and trim. I was instructed to tow the boat with the motor in it's latched up position and everything would be fine. My second trip out with it, the motor bounced out of it's latched position to down and left the skag somewhere between Toledo Bend and Houston. I have used a "skag/transom" saver ever since.

I never go without it...I've actually broken one before going down into a camping area that I hadn't been in before and found a big dip...attached it with zip ties and ropes after that.
Your transom WILL get weakened bouncing down the road without one..not to mention the possibilty of it falling as has already been said.
I agree with Scrapper. It makes a huge difference in the life of the transom on aluminum boats. A must have in my opinion.
I always use mine....put it same place as LMBarnett
I use one but I do know on some of the weaker boats like race boats it will put more pressure on the transom an cause the transom stress crack when you hit a big bump the boat will flex down an the transom savers pushes up an will cause stress on the tramson but I use one I have a 300 on the back of my boat
great info. I use one and strap it secure everytime but i have a friend who doesnt and was wanting a general concensus.
thanks everyone

I do not use a transom saver. I tried one without much success and then read on the package that the saver is only meant for motors with power tilt/trim. Mine now stays in the down position, with enough clearance unless I hit a major grade such as pulling into a gas station...but I just avoid those places...:D
I have one myself. Wouldnt haul this boat without it. Its all preference I guess but I know in my situation its adding years to my transom.
I don't have power trim and tilt and wouldn't go out without a transom saver. I've sure had to pay for a whole lot less welding since I started using one, and my boat is at least 20 years old.
