finder on a rail that i can slide where i can use it from the seat using the big motor and then slide it to where i can use if from the bow also it will have a swivel on unit so i can put at the proper angle. Can't wait til finished and i can try unit and enigneering out.
Depending on internal or external GPS you are going to have a big differential on your coordinates. If the GPS puck is mounted on the back as close the the transducer as possible, (best IMO) and you slide the unit to the front, your point you are trying to locate will be several more feet off from where you are sitting. and when you are trolling up front, you'll be seeing what is behind the boat.
I personnaly wouldn't recommend this approach, unless you have another transducer and gps puck up front and you'll be switching them when you move the unit. Even that is a pain in the butt...
Best solution, buy another unit by HB and get the interlink. It's a sweet setup.
I have my 997 on the rear of my jon boat and a Lowrance X510c up front. I'm constantly spinning around checking my 997, especially if I'm trolling. I can see schools of fish and quickly determine if they're off to the right or left of my boat. It's a great help. Not to mention, it's helpful to see what under the rear of my boat while I'm up front. I only wish that I could bring my 997 up front for a better look at it. (I use my 997 and Lowrance at the same time) If the 1197 is his only unit and he factors in the distance from where he's sitting to the transducer, I don't see a problem.
The distance of travel at max. is 4 ft. I would think that most of my markings would be from using the big motor. I have the GR-50 higher accuracy reciever.If needed i have a HB 97 matrix i can put on bow to use while fishing from there.

I mounted my 997 on PVC arm (on the center console) that swivels about 2' front to back with a bracket that will allow the unit to twist 360 degrees. Interesting enough, the unit is big enough and the seats are close enough to see the screen from the front or back of the boat.
I am still milling around the thought of a 997.
One poster mentioned linking the unit with another humminbird so that you could track points cruising with the 997 and then find the waypoints using a cheaper smaller hb until with the trolling motor?
What is a good smaller hb unit to put on the front and link together.

Got mine mounted and it looks good, just have to hook wires up and mount transducer so i will be ready to fish. I thought i would put my 1197 on a arm that would swivel but the unit is just too heavy for that method i believe so i went with the slide.

I bought a humminbird 717 to put on the bow and am in the process of buying the interlink and another gps antenna to link the 717 and the 997 together. I got some good info from JWhite about his interlink combo. I think the bow unit needs to be a 700 series, but not exactly positive. Academy Sports has 717 on clearance for 139.00 Note that the 717 only holds 750 waypoints and will only share the 750 between the units. The linking of these together with the smaller 717 unit looses the max waypoint capacity/shared waypoint capacity of the 997. I hope this takes care of the problem of transferring waypoints from a handheld to my 997 and from my 997 to the handheld mounted on the bow. My neck gets stiff looking back at the 997 on the console from the front bow seat.

I doubt that you'll be happy going from the color and resolution on a SI unit and switching to a B&W unit with a 320X320 resolution. I'd give this some thought before doing it.

Anyone know of other places to look at? I need one for my new HB788.
I like them so far! I will get some more pics of mine, I have a 1197 on the large Ram Mount and it works good. I can turn it in direction I want, and it's mounted at the the hem. I can view it from the bow or the stern, or any where in between.Quote:

Sounds like a good idea to me. The difference in GPS coordinates is less than the length of a good a cast.
