I got my next question. I am having issues with the trim button on the throttle on my boat. The trim on the motor itself works perfect. I replaced the relays on that last year. I did a big trip last year to Lake Erie and it the throttle trim started messing up. At times it will raise up but it will neve trim down. Makes it a lot difficult to drive a boat with this issue. I am trying to save some money because I am just a poor state employee. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.
check your wiring and your switches,do you have another switch on the throttle or on the bow on of those could be bad
I had the same problem about four years ago. The switch in the throttle was bad. I took it to the dealer. It only took him a few minutes to switch it out and it was not a big job. It didn't cost a lot but any time you can do it yourself and save a labor charge is a plus for those of us on a tight budget.

The switch is on the throttle. Do I take the whole throttle off or is the switch removable. It has been since early fall since I even looked at it and at the time I just figured I would take it in and let them. Glad to know it is as easy as switching it out. If you could just quickly explain how to take if off please. Thank for the help.
I'm no mechanic, but the shifter shuould split in half, (by a couple of screws) but I'm pretty sure there are springs in there that can squrit out like one of those snakes in a can. So watch when it comes apart, but it has to come apart to get the switch out. Good Luck!
I'm not much of a mechanic either but I am going to work on it tomorrow. Geting all my poles restrung and getting all the batteries charged up. Probably will fire upthe engine to make sure I don't have any other issues. I am going to pull the thing apart and see if I can get the switch off. I like the thought of maybe mounting a trim button on the steering wheel. I can only go about 40 to 45 miles an hour but I figure it is always a good thought to besafe and keep both hands on the wheel at all times. I always wanted to put a hot foot on the boat also, but that may be a little over kill. Not sure is it is possible or necessary for a boat that goes so slow. My safty issues really kick in big when I go tobig lakes like KY Lake or Lake Erie. Erie can get real nasty real quick and when it does I fear having to pull my hand off the wheel.
It is pretty easy to put one on the steering wheel. Especially if you have a trim switch on the front of the boat. If you do you will just have to get under the dash and find a red wire and a blue wire and a green wire going to the front of the boat and splice into them. The red wire is the hot wire and the blue is the trim/up and the green is the trim/down wire. I hope this helps...
I fired the boat up. Fired up pretty quick and ran good. I do need to replace the lanyard but have needed to for two years. Bilge pump is gong to be replace next week but should be a nothing jb. Debating over automatic or not. Still could not figure out the switch deal. Figured out how to put one on the steering wheel but not how to replace the one on the throttle. It appears it will be a real pain to just get the switch off. I got a friend coming over who might know but the two people with me could not figure it out either. Overall it was a great day with the motor starting and all batteries charged up,
what year/brand motor ya got ?? Maybe we can find a schematic for the throttle handle/trim switch online. That may make it easier to see how it's all connected together ... so it'd be easier to disassemble/replace.

1997 90hsp Johnson with OMC throttle assmebly. Any help would be appreciated.

but check out pg 44 ... it shows the tilt/trim switch coming out of the bottom of the throttle box ... see #7 on the schematic pic. If it comes out that way, maybe you don't have to take the throttle handle apart. It may just be that you need to unscrew a cover panel underneath, and pull the switch assembly out.
Have you already purchased a replacement ... or are you waiting to get the old one out, to get the "numbers" off of it ??

This could be a help. It explains what some of the stuff is which is definately a help. There are two screws in the handle that can come out. They probably need to come out to get in the handle to pull out the switch. The problem is that to get to those screws it appears tat I have to pull the whole control has to come off the boat. I am guessing that once it is off the boat there must be a ay from inside to pull the entire handle from the control. It would have been so simple for the screws to be put in a place where you could get to them but I am guessing they do it this way so it is not easy, hince you take it to a shop to be done.
I have not purchased one yet. I was waiting to see if I could get the switch out first. Now that I can tell possibly what all the wires are I might just purchase the trim switch to mount on the steering wheel andbe done with it. There are so many wires around there that I was not 100% positive which was which.
Looks like a perfect day to be on the water today. The boat is screaming to be backed into a lake.
Figured it out. Had to pull out tons of screws and pull stuff apart that made me nervous as all get out but I found the problem. Once I got to the switch I found that during the original installation of the switch, the screw that holds it in place was installed striped out which made the switch a little loose. Over time and use, it continued to get loose. The switch itself works perfectly, but the part that held the switch in place eventually broke off. This made it appear not to work because as I pushed it in, it wasn't going in enough to make contact. So, I hace ordered the new throttle cover for $15 and it should be in in two weeks. This is one happy guy. A project that had me nervous was easy once my brother in law looked at it and told me to stop being a chicken and start pulling stuff apart.
