My little jigs
I decided to sit and tie some easier ones. I needed a break from my 45 minute crochets.

I know, they need work but I haven't done a lot like them. Hopefully between my monsters jig and the simpler ones I will have something that will catch fish.

hey fish what are them bodys made out of? floss?
-
Embroidery floss. The one with the rainbow tail is metallic copper color. I am pretty sure it is on 1/32 #8 jigs. Now I need to tie some on the 1/64 and 1/80 ones I have so I have a really big range of sizes.
I am finding it really hard not to make the body too long.
-
i just got done tying some 1/8 on #4 hook and 1/4 on #2 hooks...never fished with anything that heavy before but going to give it a try this year...they look nice and never tryed floss body before might have to give it a shot...i always use chenille or dim. braid on my bodys

I have made some floss material jigs that the "body" was very short, more of a collar, maybe 1/8" at most. I coated the whole collar with flexament. Once the head paint was chipped up from fishing rocks, tried to recycle the jig to repaint head and that collar was solid. Took almost 10 mins to get the material off, so is very strong.
-
I need to focus more on it. The bottom one and the one to the right of bottom were the best for short bodies. I am just so used to tying all the way to the bend for other species that making a short body has not been easy for me to remember to do.
Embroidery floss is something else for strength. I tried to break a single strand a week or so ago and actually cut my finger. I will use scissors from now on. Will have to try coating one with head cement and see how it looks.

the floss is mainly what i use,i dont go down onto the hook shank.im using jigheads with a collar and i stop when the lead ends

Putting cement on really shines it up. I've always thought maybe it looks like fish slime...?

i use a high quality clear fingernail polish that my wife gets from work[she is a cosmotologist]
-
So is the whole purpose to making the body short so that you can have a long tail that isn't too far past the barb?
-
i guess it is just preference mine are about 3/4 inch past the barb
-
Some prefer the short bodies and some like myself like them long.I'm going to tie some shorter bodies and try them this year. When their looking fastball throw them a curve.Nice looking jigs, Fish.

Nice head paint job, Fish 4 All. The embroidery thread has a nice sheen to it. I kinda like 78mudbug's shorter wrap on this type of jig for more body action . A seal coat, maybe clear glitter nail polish over wraps & head would add some flash, bind the wrap to the head, and give a nice finished appearance.
-
78mudbug, is there a difference between your wife's high quality nail polish and the cheap drugstore variety?
-
The clear coat will be my next endeavor. Got a lot to learn but I think I am on my way to converting from a bait fisherman for crappie and panfish to a jig fisherman. Has been quite the challenge to convert from steelhead jig tying to crappie and panfish.
As for quality nail polish there can be a huge difference but it depends on the brand sometimes. My wife sells AVON and she has seen a big difference between their least expensive and some of the more expensive ones. But some of the more expensive ones were really bad. Just have to find what works best for the person sometimes.

Fish4All, I like the colors of the black/char/orange jig.

Red neck little jigs
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...edneckjigs.jpg
1/32 #8 red. I think I am getting better. Thinking they may be a little small for crappie but it adds more size variety to my collection. The blue tails are actually purple. I was going for subtle and subdued with these. The red is darker than it appears. I can not take a picture and get a purple to ever come out purple. Is also the first time I ever put hard as nails on any jig. Not sure about it but I sure it is tough now.
-
1ab yes there is a difference in cheap nail polish and the expensive brands.its like getting a 2000 dollar paint job on a car or running through macco for 299 .the better polish dries much harder which means it will last longer
-
Fish, these look great. They almost look like a tube jig with feathers.
-
-
The 2 on the left were the last 2. The body looks better to me that way.
Would it look better to taper them down to the tail or leave it big like that all the way down?
-
Fish 4 all
I am seeing 'purple' in the photo in post #21 - not blue. Either body style works for me.
