I've been planning to tie a few glow in the dark jigs. Seeing Skips new signature jig reminded me about them.
What are you guys opinion of glow in the dark jigs?
Do they glow well?
Do they catch fish?
I was planning on using them for some night fishing during the summer. Anybody got some pics of glow in the darks?

The jigs I tied for the jig swap #5 have a glow head.These heads are made by Erie Dearie.You can also buy glow chenille from Angler's Workshop.
I use the glow heads in some of our stained lakes and have great success with them.Right now I am using 1/80th oz. jig heads with glow chenille for ice fishing.

Ive never been really impressed with glow jigs but have to believe they do work.
I do have pictures but it was at night and the lake was dark at 15 feet :)
Mine glow very bright and for a long time as well. Please don't ask how I make them as I don't really tell that or almost never. Took a while to come up with what I use.
I guess telling wouldn't be that bad since I don't sell many, but still just one of them thangs.

I bought a bottle of GLOW dimensional fabric paint at Wal Mart....makes nice eyes, just put some on and let it dry for 72 hours. It's like a stiff glue when it comes out of the bottle, glows well and for a good duration. It's not a glaring glow, which I'm told will spook some fish. Another alternative is a fabric paint available at certain craft stores called Polymark brand....also available in a glow.
Something else I've used is a glow in the dark Pony Bead Lacing at Hobby Lobby....fifteen feet of this fine hollow lacing tubing runs a little over a buck twenty. It's the milky white coil. I clip a little, slide it over the barb and super glue it up next to the jighead....easy to do, also has a soft glow that lasts well. The way I tie flat strands on each side makes the tubing visible from underneath.

I just recieved some new glow paint from Fish Vision. I painted some heads today and they said to let it set for 24 hours. Supposed to glow over 200 times brighter and not have to recharge it. Once it sets up, I'll post my thoughts on it.
Just to clarify Skip, I don't want you to tell any of your secrets. I appreciate your willingness to just share tips, tricks, and ideas.
I was mainly curious to see if they worked very well......as in do they help catch fish?
I've got some glow powder and I have already painted a couple of heads. I haven't tried them out yet though.

Len, I'm really looking forward to taking a look at your jig once I get it from the swap. I really like the look of it, even if it wasn't glow.

I have recently started adding glow flash to my dock shooting jigs. I only add it to the "tail". My thinking for adding it to just the tail is that if it works like I hope, I want the fish to grab the tail and not the head first. Guess we will see if it works when I start hitting the docks again. It does glow for a while and is rather bright at least at home LOL
im going to order some dye i found and dye some kiptail glow and if it turns out right ill let you guys know
I have and some that say they love them and catch lots of fist using them. personally I have caught fish on them, but I don't use them a lot. I think they are good for stained water and probably better then as they can see it a lot better. Some things I tried I didn't care for much. Like flashabou glow I am not sold on that and have tried it and used it. It's not very bright though. I have also not found paint to do very well like Pro-Tec makes, not something I would use.Quote:

Hagen's has a new body material that is supposed to glow a long time. The lady I talked to said that it is still glowing every day when she gets to work in the morning. I am gonna get some to try . I use glow in the dark soft and hard beads for fishing trout at night. It helps a lot and I have sold them to others out there for 3/$1. They were happy because they finally caught fish. The glow in the dark powder paint it supposed to be awesome as well. I have a gal I buy powder paint from on Ebay that is inexpensive and is very good quality. Rosey's Powder Coating I have 11 colors of here powder paint and have never had a problem with any of it.
I like skips though. Looks like it is much more customizable than lace or powder. I think it would work well used on just one side instead of all the way around.
I may disclose how to do this tomorrow, let me sleep on it guys.

Fly hits the water, first fish sees it and says:
"What in the world is that?"
Second fish "I haven't a clue but I bet I can kill it first".
First fish, "Just make sure to spit it out, you will never be able to hide from mom that you were eating after dark!"
I like it, especially the shading/breakup from the head. A little more overlay would look even better to me.
I tie some up just for myself but I do not sell them or give them away to people. They are very effective for night or deep water fishing. I also do not tell individuals how they are made. That my friend is our secret and should remain so IMHO.:D:DQuote:

Anyone tried these new (to me) Pro-tec "super" glow powder paints? I've tried their regular glow and wasn't impressed.
I can tell you from my experience any time you add color to glow it's not going to be as bright and as good. I didn't care for them that much.Quote:

Here is a pic of some jigs I did last fall - I was testing all my powder paint - both glow and non-glow. These are 1/2 oz.
Top row - right most 4 jigs: red, green, blue, orange glow
2nd row - middle jig is white glow, w/ some non-glow blue sprinkled over it
The single jig - bottom left - what would be the 4th row - this one is non-glow hot pink w/ a glow topcoat.

I was hacking - I'd bought the powder and was testing it to see what it would do - ie 'Junebug' - melted vs dry powder, etc? All I did was to take a paint brush dipped in the powder on top of one of the just dipped jigs...
Seeing how difficult it would be to come up w/ something similar to the commerically done spray jobs....
I need to do more playing w/ paint and colors - been focused on tying and materials.....

I got the UV paint from Fish Vison, followed directions, painted jig heads, and let cure. No glow whatsoever! I called them and asked what went wrong and they said that nothing was wrong, they won't glow to the human eye. Said they will glow up to 1200 times normal underwater to the fish........hmmmmm? Will report back next week when I try them out.
SM i have talked to people that used Fish Vison and they said is was just a host...
UG, you might have just been hacking, but those are some pretty nice looking paint jobs.

Can someone show me a glow at a power of 1, then 10X, then 100x, much less 1200x?
I won't argue that fish do see glowing lures underwater. I use glow lures at night all the time on the ice (less so in soft water). It's the what they see that is the unknown.

UG, I agree! I didn't realize when I ordered that it wasn't a normal "glow" paint that didn't need recharging. Common sense should have kicked in, but the older I get, the more common sense seems to avoid me!
I seem to remember seeing something scientific where they hooks up a computer and a spectroscope or something like that to a fish eye and tested it but I don't remember where I saw it.
All I know is glow works even in daylight. After all we do fish under logs, cut banks, in heavy brush and other stuff so there has to be dark spots even in clear water and a on a sunny day.
BTW, if anyone didn't know the absolute best way to charge anything glow in the dark is with a true UV flashlight. I think the wavelength is 320nm or something like that but nothing works faster or lasts longer that I have ever used to charge glow in the dark.
The coolest thing about having glow heads painted is walking into my shop at night and seeing all the little "gremlins". Evidently some of the powder paint glow is pretty good stuff, as I can go into the shop late at night and see them still glowing.
