I like it as is. Only thing I would do differently on a few to try would be either a different color head to match one of the colors in the body or do a multicolor glitter coating on it. Maybe a semi transparent color over a polished head for a metallic look.
For me I would want the tail a bit longer and the body a little shorter. SOme may like it as is, but that is my recommendation
Also it's hard to tell how tight you have it up against the head, but you want is right up to it.
Now I bet it will catch a crappie as is, but I still stick with my opinion since that is waht you ask for.
Not a bad job though,

Ok don't ever ask for the truth if I were fishing that jig black head has gotta go perhaps a bright green or soft red tails outta there fanned out more bout 1/16 longer turn side fins vertical helps act as brush guard and go with a pearl or gold tail and fins I'll catch crappie all day long on that in a 1/32 down. those colors might work in your area work is excellent though! LOOKS LIKE WE THINK THE SAME ON TAILS SKIP.
If my wife seen em she'd want a string or two for the Christmas tree! Pretty jig.
tail is to short
tail to short
I like it, but to me the hook is to large or projects to far back.
I would want a longer tail in a softer material like craft fur or marabou to give the tail more action. Keep a few strands of the shinny tail material you used and tie it into the middle of the tail to get the flash. Otherwise I like the colors just fine. I know it would catch crappie in my neck of the woods....brim
Nice try, But I would start over
i would change head color....maybe two/three tone the head and make the tail outta marabou...but looking good
Depends on what you're trying to catch. Crappie or and eye?
Crappie? overly complicated, tail is a little stubby for me, mostly for action purposes.
Eye? Well done.
Personally, I would not use it. The body is too long and the tail is too short. Now that is just my opinion. Throw it in the water and see what the Crappies tell you. That is what is important. I just would not have confidence in it myself.
One thing about head color....personally I am not sure it makes any difference at all and for sure I don't believe making it more than one color is helpful at all except for the fisherman..
I posted a link to what color fish see and I think in that article the writer did an experiment with night crawlers and was letting them drift down stream. The fish were hitting his lead sinker more than the night crawler so the fish clearly saw something in the color of the bare unpainted lead that they liked. So paint or not, but don't lose any sleep over the head color. I like painting my heads even if it's putting a clear coat on to keep the lead from oxidizing and getting any darker and more dull.
Just my opinion here,

I think that thing looks awesome and I hate to even make a recommendation cause I'm still kind of new and all.....but, I agree the body is a little long and the tail's a little short.
Don't get me wrong though, I'd tie that thing on in a heartbeat for spawnin crappie and I'd catch em all afternoon. Great work. I love jigs with wings. I think it would be a great shallow, clear/stained water jig. Deeper water or stained/muddy water, you'd need a lil more action, longer tail.
Thanks for all the input, guys. I appreciate the honesty. I, too, like a shorter body/longer tail, but I was going for something that mimicked a minnow. They have long bodies/short tails and when sitting mostly still the tail hardly moves at all. The colors are the closest thing I had to what I think would resemble a small shad or minnow. Got a lot of great info from you all and will most assuredly use it on some jigs in the near future. I am going to try this one out before I tie any more like it. Thanks again and good fishin.
Never hurts to try, And I do hope it works for you.
Go to Target or a smaller Wal Mart and get a cheapie bottle of NYC Nail polish...color name White Lights Glitter, number 102A if my memory serves correctly....not positive about the number. Double coat the black head and you will be very pleased......It will perfectly match your blue speckled jig body. Use the search and type in "Neat jighead finish" and scroll down to the pictures posted by Len. Two coats will give you ample glitter....
I looked up that post - color is 101A. Going to have to find some....

Just my opinion again, but I wouldn't count the tail out of the minnow look. Look at it in the water and the tail is just a smaller (thinner) part of the jig. Actually it is the moving part of the jig and if you look at a minnow he has more moving than just his tail.

Went today and used the minner bug. Caught 14 in about two hours. Looks like I will be making more and trying some other colors as well.
The acid test - the rubber hit the road - the fish found your jig worthy.
