Well here is a pic of the first two I have ever done. Hey we all have to learn sometime:eek:
The top one was made with a fox tail I had. I still think a fish would bite it,or just piss it off :)

They look good will for sure catch.
Looking Good
Well on your way.... Look like fish catchers.
Nothing wrong with that. Can't see the body very well so what is it made from?
On the second one I would use less flash, but that is me and you make them how you want. I like just a few strands to set it off.
I have made some for customers that want all flash tail and am about to make an order of them up in a couple days.
So there is no right or wrong and have fun, but the real fun starts when you catch your first on one you tied.

skip, As you know I don't have my chenille yet:)
So the body is just black thread wrapped around and around and around.
I then took some of that clear glitter nail polish and spread it on. How do I make that flash lay flat and straight back instead of flaring up. I just sort of laugh at myself when I look at these
these look good to me, I'd use them. While experimenting, try looking at them in the water to see how things lie & flatten out-the way the fish will see them.
Thanks Super Dave Osborn!!! Do any stunts lately :) :)
Was one of my favorite shows:)
It is hard to get the tinsel to lay flat so I always make the curve face the jig and not away. You can also not go so far away from the head to make you neck and you can secure it just fine with half what you did and then the hair from that fox will start to flair faster making it look better.
Look at my Sig pic and that is all you really need to tie the hair in. I sometimes have mine a little bigger than this one, but I don't go as far as you did. Probably will not matter to the fish though, LOL!

They will definitely catch some slabs. They look much better than the first one's I ever tied.
The doctor is in the house! Pretty good job for your first efforts. I am not that much a fan of "Glue glitter" because imho it does not hold up well in the field. I'd rather use thread on the neck or chenille on the body.
When I use Krystal flash it is usually two not more than three strands. Fold the strands in half and hold it 1/2 way on your jig. Tie it on with a few wraps then fold the back 1/2 over and lock it in with a few more wraps. Use scissors and cut open the loops formed. This simple step stops fish from pulling it off. I know some of those Crappies at Weiss are in for a meal. Still a pretty good job though. Have fun my friend.
Way,way, better then my first jigs.I learned all of the jig tying information from these guys at Crappie.com. Check out Skip's slide show on this forum he shows a great way to cut hackle. Below is a Pic of my first ties and today's ties!!!

You're gonna be one heck of a "jiggmeister" if those are your first jigs...Very well done. My first attempts ended up "snagged" in a land fill somewhere.

Thanks guys. I had to use what I had. Ioreded some chenille and should have it next week. The glitter nail polish is all I had at the time. And I used some sewing thread from the wifes basket. I oreded alot of materials so hopefully they will start to look a little better. But I actually do like the fox tail one. It looked good in a glass of water:)
Len, I do like that bottom left one. How do I get my tails from flairing out and to lay flatter down?
I am no expert by far, but have learned a way to keep flash, silicone or hair to lay a little more flat. Maybe I'm wrong, if any one thinks so, yell at me!!!
Once I get the flash locked in, I use the same method as Ship, and start to wrap towards the tail, the farthest wraps back I don't wrap near as tight. The tighter you wrap, the more it will flair. Once you try some deer hair, you will see what I mean. Just make sure once you are 2 wraps up from the tail, go tight again, or it will unravel. Flex cement or head cement never hurts, when you get it, use it!!
Those are very nice and would not believe those are your first attempt if you did not say so!! Great job!
so are you saying go loose and then tight when I get near the bend in the hookand then when I work back towards the head go loose and then tight again up near the jig head?
Yeah I laughed at them too cause I'm amazed those are your first jigs ever. My first jigs were little more than a loose wad of feathers and string with a hook sticking out the back. :o
No joke at all, those look great. I like the color and length of that fox tail and the color choice looks awesome. Great jigs. Post more pictures of the next ones you tie.
The last 2 or 3 wraps closest to the bend (the back end) that are actually laying down the tail material are the ones I do a little looser. You just have to make sure the material is locked down good with tight wraps before you do the 2 or 3 on the back end. I work back up from there, place a hitch or drop of glue and then work on the rest of the body up to the front. Hope this makes a little more sense.
When I say a little looser, I do not mean to just lay it across. Hard to explain, so try it out with some scrap hair. Put the hair on the hook and start to wrap very tight and see what happens, then let up little by little and you will see the difference. The feel of it comes with the more you tie.
You are welcome Len. For those of you who want to know about eyes on jigs, I recommend you read this thread.

well here are 3 more.. Tell you what that blue buck tail is a pain!!
Nice looking jig's Doc! they'll get the job done!
Tell you how I do those buckies Doc.When I start My wrap and all tha way through I don't let the thread get to near the head then I go around the head with My exacto knife and trim It even then I wet tie this area as I build it up this way I can very the shape of the jig thin for minnow's wide like your's for perch patteren's. it makes oit easier and stronger.
Got some nice jigs right there. Try em and if they work make more!!!!!!!
Fatman
There is nothing better to cut deer hair than a double side razor blade. Not very safe, but that is what most fly tiers use to trim when they are spinning deer hair flies.
I keep a pack in my tying desk and you have to be very careful not to cut the thread which I have done before, LOL!
Now my son with all his medical troubles had some disposable scalpels that I plan on using to see how they do. He claims that if you cut your self with them you will not even feel it and so this is not a safe bet either.

Like the green and blue one I use those colors alot...
