I gather as many as i feel like sinking, this yr its 23. I use 8-10 per spot. I prefer oval shapes so everyone in the boat has brush to fish. I place them in 14-17 ft of water. I trim the limbs and make them look like poodle bushes and then place the bases in pipe or buckets and fill with concrete. My trees work great about 4-5 months after placed. Probably get 20-30 keepers off each pile every time you fish them. heres some pics
those trees with the poodle cut look really good. i like the idea of opening them up like that. do you do as good with them the next year as the first?

typically i do just as well if not better the 2nd year, but i add brush each yr to my old spots. the poodle cut gets more big fish in there. I have sunk some without the cut and had alot of dinks around those but no big fish. around the poodle cut i have even caught 8 lb bass while crappie fishing.
I like the way you cut out sections for the fish to get in and under. I like to do something like that with my. Do you leave all the needles on when you sink them?

I have sunk many Christmas tree with good luck. But my hat goes off to you for the poodle cut... ;)makes good sense to cut the limbs back to allow fish to get in and under the limbs....:D
But I put a 2.5 gal jug in the top of my tree to keep em upright instead of laying on the bottom......

oh they stay standing up.....not much current in the lake i fish and the weights sink into the mud a little. My 797 shows them standing upright.
agdave112, What kind of boat do you use to transport them to the hole? I would lovew to see a picture of that.... I don't think that my bass tracker could hold more than 2 or 3 at the most

i lay em sideways in a boat about 5 at a time
we call that ''coontailing'' in my part of ohio..
we also burn the needles from them.,
put them in 5 gallon bucket with 3/4 gravel
and then top 3'' of sakrete. bolt 2X4 wood in a x
to the bottom of the 5 gallon buckets. so they
sit up right..then lower with ropes...

Where do you find water deep enough to cover a christmas tree in St.Mary's?;) Real nice crappie lake, but I'm not sure I've seen much more than 6' of water when I've been there. Maybe you can share the location of some of them so I can see for myself. :D I'm probably going to fish the BCC tourney there this year. Might give me somewhere to start besides the toons and docks.Quote:

many of the places here at grand lake,, that are good get swamped
to a degree of ugliness..the last flw tounament i witnessed came
from one of the NEW channels i live on,, the south side of the lake (hint)
so many boats they couldnt manuver,,threating to get out and fight each other on the banks..really sad..i have a new ranger ,,many of them
during that tournament insited that i get off my cell phone
(was talking to brother at the time) guess it is a tounament
rule? they didnt realize i was not in the tournament,,just was worried
that some one else was getting something they wasnt,,mean while
none of them was giving each other the 50 yard grace rule.
literally fishing on top of each other,,kind of gives a black eye
to flw and the hole tournament scene,,
when b.a.s.s. lifted the 150 h.p. limit it was about money then..
fishing a federation circuit,,why should i pre fish all day to have
some one beat me to my spot were they seen me lift fish with
a 200 h.p. motor? when i have a 150 h.p.? enough said..
be a passionate waterfowl hunter,,i wade in many spots in many
different duck blind locations,,find water depth quickly in places
you wouldnt think would hold more than the ''labled 6 foot of
water lake''..there are many, many, many places that hold more
than 6 feet of water here..
i have vented enough,
but there is good water here.
i catch my share of crappies here..
way over my fair share (800 plus a year)
and are some real slabs i find more
pleasure in eating them and giving them
to people who really enjoy eating them also
then i would ever again tournamnet fish for them
or any other fish for that matter.as far as the money
per weight for game fish? the outdoorsman here
has good money going out for catfish tournamnets.
way more pay out then crappie or bass,but hey. we
all have to cut our teeth learning water and patterns,,
wich is what i call federation and other tournaments..
there is no money in it,,see many ''ole federation
tournament fisherman.. getting ole slimy on there hands now
when they used to cuss about un hooking ole'' slimy when they
was tournament bass fishing,, too funny,
i may however share a boat with you someday..
and show you one place? lol...where there is more than
6 feet of water here,,forget about the old canal resievor

Your basstracker will hold three medium trees with concrete blocks and cable attachments :) But you'll have to lash them down if you cover much water between the dock and the drop point. Three trees will BURY the unlucky sole in the back seat, too. lol
They DO make a MESS of the boat, however. But wood is better than pvc and pvc is better than nuttin' donchaknow.
The poodle cut is a good idea. I'll have to employ it on my next planting.

Great idea! make sure you cut some plugs in the side all the way around, and they will draw more fish. Also we switched this year to what they call switch-cane man does it bring in the crappie!
