I was thinking about the speed of the gps on the 997, 797, and if you had more channels on the receiver wouldn't that give you faster response time ?Plus improve the accuracy. I have bought the garmin ex legand but prefer to not have to carry the extra equipment if I can get the 997 Gps to respond in a reasonable time frame.
Again, I don't think it has anything to do with the GPS receiver. I have a 16 channel on my Matrix 87c & it works fine. I believe the problem lies in the unit's ability to process the info and update the screen. I believe the units don't have a big enough processor.Quote:

The new 50 channel GPS receivers are more accurate but they are not going to lock on to any more satellites than the 16 channel receiver. There are only about a dozen GPS satellites visible from North America at this time.
If I mark a spot off to the left or right , I have to turn the boat until I get the arrow pointed towards the marked spot on the gps screen wait until the arrow lines up and stops moving then ease my way in towards the spot and zooming in the closer I get . Am I doing something wrong or is that the same thing you guys are talking about on here?
I gave up on the arrow thing - went back to using it like I did my old
dino Lowrance... I keep it set north up, and if what I want to go towards
is beneath me on the screen, I go south. right of me, east and so on.
As long as you can keep track of which bank is which it works for me.
Just have to stop when you think you're not quite to something yet,
let 'er blink a time or two, and you may find you're already there ;)
I believe they are using multiple channels to receive the same satellite, thus the 50 channels. I believe this satellite sharing is done on the agri gps. Some how they massage this data for a more finite fix. They won't share, so I am Swagging. I could be wrong.....Quote:

Does it give you the coordinates as you mark it so that maybe you can enter them into a more accurate handheld?
And, Is it possible to interface the SI with a handheld so the waypoints will be automatically uploaded to the handheld (Garmin Etrex)?
Just wanting to learn all that I can before I make the big purchase and don't get everything that I need.

I have a buddy that has the 997. He doesn't hook a handheld to it but I believe you could. Have to ask the HB boys. It does show you the coordinates. That's what my buddy does. He marks a spot with the 997, enters the coordinates into a garmin handheld the navigates to the spot. Lot of trouble if ya ask me. I have mine interlinked to my 87c on the bow. It is quick. Darn shame HB won't work on this problem. Make me think long and hard before buying another HB unit. I want to upgrade but it's kinda a matter of principal with me now.Quote:

The 797 and 997 have a nema out function only. Don't know about 1197. You can't send/receive data between the different units. You have to use a program called Humminbird pc to convert files for the HB. It is BS, but they got us by the gonads.
Fling a marker toward the target and go hunt it down is what I try to do. I ain't worth a crap at it though.
Ment to add that my unit is for entertainment more than anything. I just like gadgets.

The 50 channels refers to the number of parallel radio contacts it can maintain, while it can aquire 32 channels at a time, and only ever use 16 actual satellites to compute a position (from the data sheet). The above was taken from a U-blox document. I'm not exactly sure what it all means but the bottom line is the high degree of accuracy. And from other sources I understand it has a very fast aquisition time.
That was what my original thought was ,since it has the extra channels locked on to a stronger signal ,would it (the GPS) be able to update quicker?, Called Hb there is 2 new receivers 1 being the 50 channel and the other called the high accuracy receiver . and the anwser to my question about speed was no as Wiskers said and Pan man, it only gets you closer to the marker . So now I need to leaern to use my ex legend for gps .Great
