I know there is some deep water in that river and West Neck and Pocaty rivers hold crappie in spring.
Sure is a quiet bunch that fish it!!
I know it was plum full of perch in the 1970's are they still there? I remember an old fella saying to me "Bass, ain't no bass in this river, go speck fishing if you want to catch a fish"
What about the first canal North of Pungo Ferry on the right, it leads to a grain place. It is 10+ feet all the way to the end.
Gotta be honest I never even heard of it before. Didn't even realize that was down there!
I fish West Neck mostly during the summer, close to home, a lot of small shad making for some fat crappies. Reel fun has had some pretty good luck down at Blackwater Creek. I've heard there has been some real good perch both white and yellow in the loop across from Pungo Ferry marina in the last couple of winters. We used to kill them there back in the 70's fishing from shore in the old ferry slips. Another spot that I haven't been in along time is the creek that comes off the river up to Creeds, think they call it Long Creek, used to have some abandoned barges in it. There used to be killer brim fishing around those barges, of course that was in the 60's.
Been known to fish both of those creeks. Usually during sping or summer months. I have taken some nice size crappie out of West Neck but not much out of Pocaty. Probably never caught a perch bigger than 10" out of either. Never had hit it when it was cold. Always on the NWR or Blackwater Creek in the fall and winter.
Have fished it with SH around the island. havent seen any deep water there.:)
I know the spot your talking about...that grain area was fairly productive for me at times for crappie last year, I also did okay with bluegill there, however that cove is usually catches the wind directly on windy days.Quote:

Pearch are on the bottom in the early spring fishing from the rocks at the marina ;)
Looks like a good place to explore more. I do know that striper fishing is getting to be the biggest deal there. Even heard of puppy drum getting caught by bass fisherman.
About three years ago in Jan I was fishing West Neck for crappie past Indian River Rd and after four hours I caught a 10'' puppy drum. I don't know who was more confused me or the fish.Quote:

Salmon's Ditch (the grain ditch) used to be a great little secret, but the fish don't go in there like they used to. They dredge it two - threyears ago and have a lot more barge traffic in there now that they supply stone, so it get stirred up quite a bit now. So it is really hit or miss. However, like mentioned a lot of the creeks off the North Landing get good in the spring and summer and I have seen some really nice fish come out of the Blackwater as well. The main river you can catch really nice white perch and the bream are all over the stumps out there. The only issue with the main river is the yachts!
This thread was dug up from 8 years ago. I live within 10 miles of the river and have been meaning to spend more time on it. I am going to head out there tomorrow for a few hours and see if I can figure out where they hide in the winter.
