i want to learn how to tie jigs but my wife would kill me if i spend a lot of money on another one of my hobbies so what all would i need and about how much could i spend getting started tieing jigs could i buy some of the stuff at hobby lobby? :)

I started out with a junk vise, bags of craft feathers and sewing thread. I used any hook I could find, even bait holder hooks. Over the years I have found there are some materials you can't skimp on, but many can be found at hobby stores.
If you get good enough and want to sell em, ya better get the good stuff!:cool: You find out what you want to upgrade as you go. Have fun!
Sky's the limit but for bare minimum crappie jig starts, what I suggest:
1. Inexpensive vise (under $20)
2. Bobbin to hold thread spool (careful, some cheap ones fray & break thread)
3. Small scissors (regular household will work if sharp enuf to cut thread & fibers)
4. Tying thread (start with strong, like size E rod wrapping thread)(red color is good)
5. Cheap clear nail polish for securing and finishing wraps.
6. Marabou feathers or rabbit fur zonker strips white, black, & chartreuse
7. Flashabou or Crystal Flash (optional)
8. 1/16 #4 hook plain ball no collar jig heads
I'm no expert, and welcome any corrections or additions.
Jig heads are as good as it gets from Grousefly on crappie.com.

Go to youtube.com and type in 'jig tying' in the video box......it will get you started....you can also try 'fly tying' and anything else you think would be related. If you've not been to youtube.com it's a collection of various videos sent in by the general public.

Well I learned way early that u don't get into the making to save money. And if you don't substitute it for a life, its not something to make you money for most either. It is something you get into because u love it and stay for the same reason or that it is exciting to make, experiment, and entertaining. I not only love doing all the stuff I do in making lures, jigs, etc., I enjoy giving them to my friends and sharing of ideas with them.

Im kinda playing around with the idea of tieing my own jigs for both crappie and bream. Just wanting to hear your side of the story when it comes to saving money. I have done a little math on it and it doesnt seam like you save that much money. It seems to me to be alot like re-loading your own shotgun shells. You do it more for enjoyment. Not to save money. Let me know if you guys are really saving that much money.

Split shot crimped on jig hooks works well. I crimp them on flattening the split shot somewhat then powder painting to fill gaps and seal them shut. Not a problem with them flinging off yet and have made a bundle. If you want a minnowhead shape, use clamshot from Bass Pro Shops. It's an elongated oval shape and when flattened makes a nice shape for minnowhead jigs.
