Hello and my jigs

Well I guess I should say hello. Didn't see an introduce yourself section so. From Washington, way out on the coast. Lots of places to fish but not a ton of crappie/panfish, not that I can catch anyway.

I have a jig I was looking for feedback on from some who might have an idea if they will work.

Does anyone think they will work for anything? I have caught rainbow trout, cutthroat, and sea bass on them and caught steelhead on larger ones.

Anyone think they might work for crappie, bream, perch, hybrids and other panfish?

If they are small enough, bream (bluegill, sunfish, perhaps perch) should do well.

If you don't mind sharing, how are you making them? Very interesting. Welcome to the board and thanks for posting.

those look fine. I think they will work great for bream and other small panfish i dont know if crappie will eat that or not. but they might. you never know till you try. Welcome to the site. I use to live in washington. I lived in the mountains of north bend. Good see a fellow fisherman from there.

i would think gills would do well on them and so would perch what size hooks are they

Those look real close to hellgramites insects in some of the rivers I fish.Tie something off the back and you would have a crayfish look-alike as well. Bet you could do very well catching smallmouth bass and rock bass.

Please give some info on what the materials are...... are they weighted?

The curved ones in the pictures are size 8 mustad 37160 hooks. I have tied them on size 10 and 12 so I think I can make ones small enough for just about anything. On straight hooks I have tied them on sizes as small as 16 but with only a couple crochets they really don't look right. I think the straight one is an extra long size 4 or 6 right off the top of my head, and that one is weighted. The curved ones might be, might not be. Can be done either way. They do sink without being weighted.

I have tied these one hooks for size 16 all the way up to 5/0.

I have seen a lot of woven patterns so I would have to say no. These are crocheted. I have only seen one way to do it so it the best way I know to explain it. I actually use a crochet hook to tie them but it can be done without one.

Since those who want to make their own will find out how anyway. :p Crochet fly tying instructions I have tried to sell these before without much luck but I have a bunch to offer if anyone is interested.

I couldn't find anything on the site rules about selling anything so if there is something I need to do or get permission someone please let me know.

I can weight them or leave them plain, all depends on how I tie them. Almost all of the smaller ones are weighted by using lead core trolling line. Makes a really nice base that I can use pliers on to flatten a little to really give a nice clean appearance.

Base material can also be chenille, vernille or whatever else so you can add a scent or add some under color that can show between the segments.

Larva Lace is the material I prefer for the crochet. Works really well and makes nice tight crochets. They lack some colors I would really like to have in the hallow stuff but oh well. I am not sure that bright colors like chartreuse and orange would work for most pan fish anyway. Trout they might as I have caught them on orange colored ones but crappie and perch might be turned off by them. Will post pictures of the bright colored ones. Larva lace does have a new material that is a lot brighter so it is an option now but it is solid and not hallow so the crochet segments will look different. Might be better, might not, won't know until I can afford to get some and try it.

The large ones are not tied with Larva Lace, it is regular craft lace. Larva laces is just not big enough to use. I can make the large ones with it but the cost is prohibitive.

Those are really cool, the black and yellow looks just like a catapla worm. Should catch some bream for sure.

I agree sticksteer, that black and yellow should tear the bream up! I'd definitely try it for crappie too.

What size hook should I tie them on for when I take these things out for crappie, bluegill and perch? I normally use a size 6 but I think I am using too big a hook. Might have to tie a lot more on size 8-10 and maybe I will get more takes rather than hit and misses. I don't think we have any bream here though but you never know.

Would it also help to tie them up with chenille so I can add some secnt or will it matter much?

I have not had the opportunity to fish in Washington but if there are panfish around then your jigs should serve you well. I know that in the Southeast they would catch alot of fish and fishermen. As for the hook size #8 and larger should be fine all the way up to and including 1/0 for the occasional bass and larger crappie. I agree that if you would add a little short trailing tail of some kind they would be even more effective for crappie and bsass. The yellow and black catalpa worm look alike is great just like it is. If it'll catch trout it'll catch panfish 99.99% of the time. I will have to see about making some up with a tail. I have enough marabou that's for sure. Should it compliment the jig or be on off color?

Man you stole my thunder. I am actually working on a woven catalpa for the swap. :eek:

now that you posted the oher pics i would say hell ya would work on gills and i would try jiging them for crappie
adding a small tail would be cool too i would say to compliment the jig

The basic concept is easy, getting it to look right took me a long time and half a bottle of aspirin. Just a crochet and then putting some kind of head on it was easy. You can hide the rest of it in the head. Getting a nice clean looking head with just the lace was a bear.

It is actually kind of funny that they have so many applications. I initially only made them for salt water, trout and steelhead. I never considered them a panfish jig.

I am actually working with someone trying out tying them on jig heads. They look good so far so I could have something to try this spring in places where I know there are panfish but they are finicky and hard to get them to hit anything.

On a jig head sounds even better. I can see using those on a fly rod, but just wouldn't think you could get enough leadcore on it to be able to cast very far with a spinning outfit. You have me thinking of new materials... don't know how to crochet but I do know how to macramae.

So if you made these originally for saltwater... what swims out there that looks like that!!! :confused:

what smims in fresh water that is pink and orange and blue and every wild color in the rainbow....can't think of anything...but that ain't stopping them slabs from eating it lol. I can't imagine what a fish thinks a buzzbait is...I have never seen one of mother natures beasts go sputtering across the top of the water like that but that is one of my favorite bass baits...I think they hit some things BECAUSE they have never seen the thing before...just my limited brain celled opinion...brim

Well, where to start.
Salt water:
ghost shrimp, pile works, sand worms, juvenile shrimp/prawns, Sand fleas, Water fleas and some others

Fresh water:
caterpillars, Helgramites, Mayfly nymphs, snails, Leeches, flat worms
earthworms, crayfish.

Too many to list really. It looks close to a lot of stuff I have found in and around the waters I fish in.

I will have to measure how far I can cast them. I will have to get both an unweighted and weighted size 8 and see how far they go. I can only guess but I think I can throw and unweighted one close to 30 feet. Does that mean everyone can, probably not but I know I can throw a single egg hook with one egg and no other wieght over 10 feet easy.

Let's see, the curved hook mustad 37160 in size 6 I threw over 35 feet on a good cast. The straight shank size 6 extra long Eagle Claw I threw right at 30 feet and this was using a 5' Shakespeare 2 piece rod with 6# test. Both have one wrap of lead core line on them the length of the jig/fly.

I always wondered though why the segmentation matters? If the colors really offset each other then maybe like the Bream colored one but the worm colored ones, I am not sure. Might be the clearness to them, might be the segmentation and the crochet that gives them a "I'm gonna eat that" look to trout but they work really well for them. The pink, orange and bright colored ones just work for whatever reason. Whatever the reason, I have tried the segmented crochetted ones beside ones that I simply wrapped the lace around the hook and the crochets worked better. Better action maybe, I don't know.

Unweighted size 8, 27 feet was my best with the same rod and line. Average was about 20 feet. Not the best but around here I can see the panfish I am targetting most of the time so that is plenty far for me to cast. Doesn't mean I can catch them but I can see them!

I can not say ow well they will work on light weight rods but I can fly fish with them easily on an 8 weight for steelhead. I have never tried them on my 5 weight. Will have to give it a try and see if I can cast them at all.

The material gives some weight to them. If I had an accurate scale I would weigh them unweighted and weighted to see what they come out at. The best I could do is to use a makeshift balance and compare them to known weights.
