H'bird stuff I found out...

First, I just got the interlink to hook 797 and 787 together.
I wanted to keep each unit paired with the gps receiver (puck, whatever
you want to call it) that was next to it, mounted right over a transducer.
797 in the back, 787 in the front. Did not want to share one receiver
and have the boat length added in on waypoints saved on the unit at the
other end of the boat. To make it short, I asked Justin at Three Rivers
if you could do that. He didn't know, so he called his sales rep, who told him
"No, you can't do that". Well I'm here to tell you, yes. Yes you can ;)
Hooked each unit up with the Y cable to a reciever and the interlink box,
left the third (receiver) port on the box empty, and it works like I want.
Shares waypoints and data fine. Hmmmph. So much for sales reps.

Second, as part of the kit H'bird sent me to fix my interference problem,
they sent me a 997 style (big) SI transducer. I was running the compact
SI transducer that came with the 797 up till now. Anyway, today was
the first time to try it all out, and WOW! The difference is night and day.
I had just about decided that this 797 was a crock - I've seen some 997s
on the water, and mine didn't work nearly as well. Now, I believe it will
give them a run. Still smaller screen, but now a wood pallet on the bottom
LOOKS like a pallet. Was there something wrong with my old transducer,
or is the big one just that much better? I don't have any way of knowing,
all I know is now the thing is working like it ought to. So happy camper -
for now :D

Yep, Now you need to get the high accuracy reciever and you will be set.... Well there are the latest nav cards... And don't forget the weather sense and the xm weather subscription.. It never ends... Hehe!

OK man you got me hooked :D What do I need to get for this to work in my boat. I will be connecting a (1197c SI with it's own GPS puck and a Wheather Sense module) to a (777c2 with it's own GPS puck) ?
The Humminbird web site does not offer the manual for the Inter Link Unit. So I'm not sure if that is all I will need to order or not? Also the Questions area didn't address what comes with the Inter Link unit. If I could find a wiring diagram it sure would help. Or a parts list of what comes with the the unit.
I have my GPS pucks set up as you do with each puck over the top of it's transducer. Thanks for any help on this.

Question

Hey Mr. White, buy changing transduces, are you talking about changing to the skimmer transducer. That big slab with the metal mount? I have one that I bought off ebay but I just got it for a spare. I might want to change them out if it will make that much diff.

I have a 997 interlinked to a 917. It's a simple install. Instructions come with the Interlink. Works good.

The intgerlink comes with inst. and cable. You cant mess this up. cable in cable out. this is a must have adder. I love it.

Well whats got me confused is. On the 777c2 I have a empty connection with the Y-Cable for it. But on the 1197c I have the GPS on one of the Y's and wheather sense on the other. So were or how does the Inter Link connect all this together?? :confused: Is it like an ethernet switch ?? with more than 1 port ??
I take it that the Inter Link is connecting the communication port of one unit to the communication port of the other. What type of communication line is this RS232? RS422? RS485? or none of the above?? Does everything just daisy chain together.
I'm going to order one but wanted to make sure I didn't need any extra cables or anything like that.

The GPS puck hooks to the interlink, and leads run from the interlink to the GPS recepticles on the units.

Wiskers - yessir, the 'ducer I'm using now is the big, flat whopper -
like six or seven inches long with metal bracket, which by the way I
like a whole lot better. I'm curious if you have the same result I did,
or maybe my little 'ducer was just bad???

Wantabe, I was sorta confused about all that too, let me just tell you how I've
got mine working, yours should be similar. Wish I cold draw a pic and post it.
Anyway, front unit y cable: nmea-com is hooked to front puck, accy-com is hooked to
20' cable that came with interlink, ran back to unit #2 port on interlink.

back unit y cable: nmea-com hooked to back puck, accy-com is hooked to the weathersense module, cable coming out other end of weathersense is plugged into unit #1 port on interlink.
There is a 10' cable that comes with the i'link I didn't need because the link and weathersense are mounted in a compartment right behind the 797, and the cable on
the weathersense was long enough so I didn't need the extra 10'.

The third port on the interlink is left open, empty.

The weathersense info will show up on the front df now, only catch is the back unit
has to be turned on for this to work. I've found out it's better for me to just leave both
units on the whole trip, I just turn the sonar off on the setup page if I'm gonna be at the
other end of the boat all day... reason for this, the waypoints you store will go to both
units without delay - if one is turned off, the next time you turn it on it will detect new
waypoints and go through the "sync" routine and ask if you want to add it to the other
unit. No big deal, but it takes a minute or two to run through.

If you've got Y cables already on both units, you shouldn't need anything else -
dummy me had lost one of my Y cables somewhere along the line, but
Three Rivers fixed me up with one.

That's the one I've got. I was think'n bout using it for a 4-wheeler ramp but not now! :D Sounds like a good "crappie weather" :D project. While it's not fit'n to fish I'm gonna swap'um out. I'll let ya know what I come up with.

Oh, and maybe Santa will leave us a download on the HB website that will fix the lag in our units! :rolleyes: YEAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Yeah, that's the one I've got now. The one that came with the 797
was shorter but thicker - squattier I called it :)

Awhile ago I was doing some reading on one of the unofficial H'bird forums
and ran across this topic - is 997/1197 trans. compatible with 797 head unit.
Humminbird Greg did say that it was, and it will give
"a slightly better detailed image than the 797 transducer does"
In my case, it was more than what I call "slightly" better, but like I said,
maybe my original was not operating at it's best.

Thanks for the info. The system seems to be working like a champ. Had to upgrade the firmware on the 777c to get it to work with the interlink but that was pretty easy.
Battery in the Weather Sense Module already showing " Low Power Alert " what kind of battery life are you getting?

So far I'm still on the original battery - BUT :) I've went into the menu
and turned "sampling" off so it isn't working 24/7.

I actually did this on advice from one of the Humminbird guys because
I was getting all sorts of crazy "predictions" from the thing when I got
to the lake due to elevation changes, going up and down hills driving to
the lake. I just let it start fresh when I power the units up.

I really don't put much stock in the forecast part of it anyway, today
it was all over the place from sun to p/c to rain, and back and forth
several times over 8 hours.
