There will be plenty in a couple of weeks. Thinking of planting some in the lake for structure. Whats the best way to secure then and sink them to stay in place?

in cinder blocks or 5 gal buckets with concrete. take some galvanized nails and put into the base of the trunk before cementing to hold them in place. also cut out a few of the branches on each one to make holes for bigger fish. I usually put 8-10 in a spot in whatever design you want, but i prefer circles.
I like to tie them behind my truck with a rope and pull them down the road to remove all the dead neddles out, it helps..
We used to wire a concrete block on the bottom and tie an empty bottle with the lid on the top, but I think putting it in a container with concrete would work better.
I do know of some Texas guides that use willow trees and still put them out the old way, but they are probably taller than the Christmas trees.
They Are My Least Favorite Structure. Most Are Not Really Cedar And Don't Last Long. But Good Luck If That's What Your Going To Put Out.;)
we catch more off them than anything , just add to them yearly they work great
I use concrete test beams that are 6"x6"x22"....
Drill a hole in the middle.... run a nylon rope through...... tie off.... tie to tree... tie a 2.5 gal jug in the top of the tree and sink....
That way the tree stays upright all the time......
Can locate em on your graph better standing up than laying down....:D
My 2 cents.......
Good fishing............
I used to take them and cut some of the braches off of the bottom and then slip the bottom of the tree (trunk) thru the middle of an old steel wheel (they will give them to you at junk yards sometimes) and then nail two boards in an "x" on the bottom of the trunk and then duct tape some rip rap rock to the top of the wheel. This lets the tree stand up when you sink it. It's great because it looks just like a Christmas tree on your depth finder and you can really see the fish hanging off the side of it like Christmas tree ornaments. Fish love it too!!! Caught lots of fish off of these until they rotted away.
Not my favorite structure but I do use them. I take 2 large christmas trees stick the trunks through each hole of a large cement block and use 2 inch dry wall screws to fasten a strip of plywood across both. I usually put 3 set ups to each spot.
Would an artificial Xmas tree work? I've got a couple of old ones just taking up space in the shed.
I would think that the metal twisted wire that is the basic build of an artificial tree would rust away fairly quick...IMO
Also, look at the idea posted by agdave112 here....

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll just try & round up a few cedar trees. I wanted to put a few crappie condos out close to the marina where I could get to them easily on those windy days when it's too bad to get out on the river. The marina's pretty well protected by a high slope on the sour & west side.
