whats the brush technique
I guess my question is this....is the fancy painting for the fish or the fisherman? I suspect you will catch more fisherman than fish because of the fancy painting. Just my opinion now and if you like doing all that then I think you should, but if you think fancy painting is going to get more bites, I don't think so.

nice jigs ledhed. i love those ultra heads.
SLJ
The brush technique is using an artist brush (or your preference), dipping it into fluffed up powder paint, and applying it over a heated jig at different axis (primarily sides, top, and bottom). My heat source is a variable temperature heat gun.

“is the fancy painting for the fish or the fisherman?” Neither, I do it for me because it’s something challenging to do and the only reason the pics are posted here is to demonstrate that there are alternative painting methods to use with PP.
I am confused with the term “fancy painting” - I think it’s more about shades than color. What the pics don’t show is the holographic glitters mixed in with the paints or the translucent overlays on the darker upper shades. Not necessarily “fancy painting” but adding more attractants to the lure. It’s pretty much the same reason why all the different body materials, different reacting tail materials are used for the jig. If it’s done for the body – why not for the head?
These jigs were made to blend in with plastic swimbaits. Except the bass pattern – somebody wanted to know if it could be done.

You can do a lot of stuff with those heads..
LedHed as usaual those are great.
Fellows those in the top Pic U have to see with it in your hand and out in the sunlight to really appreciate it as the glitter that is in the "mix" will really show up.
LedHed "baited me up" to trying the "brush technique" and you can do all sorts of things with it.
Skip there is some mental stuff that goes with detail work as I see it in your jigs ties .. which are great ... the same thing applies to the jig head ... For years I have made spinner baits that I did not paint .. I started this Powder Painting for some Saltwater jigs that I sell and now I want all of my spinner baits painted as well.
LedHed might could make us a tutorial on this ... how bout it Sonny ? Hope I did not put you on the "spot" ... Ted might share it with this forum?
Yall can see what Flatfish has done as well from a post yesterday ... when you can do it as well as LedHed you can say you are a pro at it.
Have a Good One

Thnx JSC
Haven't talked with cadman in awhile - need to get him over here.
THEM NICE, especialy the first ones, love the multi color look. THANKS
the way i look at as its been called fancy painted heads
alot of us tie jigs and most of us try a ton of stuff to make the better and painting the heads no matter how fancy is part of it
will it get more hook ups well yea it will becouse you will belive in it and fish it but does the fish realy care hmm prob not but who cares he likes to paint them like that he can and if others dont they dont its part of making your own stuff
on a side note would anybody buy a crank bait that wasnt all fancy lol
LedHed, In the quest to make a better looking jig that is just flat awesome. I'd like more detail on how you do it!! Great job.
I think the fish would like the looks of them they look pretty realistic to a minnow and with some scented plastics I bet they would do very well. Great job!!!

OK guys, here I am. I just received an e-mail from JSC today about this site. Hopefully I will be able to help some of you guys out with powder painting.
Hey JSC, you guys are going to keep me too busy answering questions about powder painting, instead of making jigs.
Thnx CDC members for the comments.
cadman
You made it!! This is really cool site - lots of tyers.
Am sure you will be getting lots of requests for your tutorials.

Will try to work up a photo shoot. Try a PM to cadman for a tutorial.
Guys Welcome Cadman
Glad You made it over
... now we have you and LedHed to ask a bunch of questions.
Enjoy

welcome cadman very glad you could make it. i know i have a lot of questions to ask. considering all i can do at this point is heat a head and dip it in the powder
Thanks for the welcome. Just bear with me while I try to find my way around here. I noticed a lot of questions regarding multi-color and powder painting. Some guys here I know very well, Ledhed, JSC, and some of you I will hope to get to know, by passing along some of my powder painting knowledge. I have been pouring and painting jigs going on about 7 years. The last 4 or so I've dedicated my self to powder painting. I currently have a powder painting tutorial, that I am willing to let you guys read, if you PM me your e-mails. Just don't overwhelm me. I'll get to everyone that is interested. I'll also answer any and all questions regarding powder painting and multi-color powder painting. You may want to ask why multi-color powder painting. Led Hed and I and some others have been doing this for quite awhile. Making multi-color jigs brings you to the next level of powder painting if that's what you want. I'm not forcing anyone to do this. If you want fabulous looking jigs, then multi-color is in the direction you should be going. I also have a fluid bed tutorial, that came about from learning how to build one from LedHed. He showed me all the components, and I put it down on paper. If anyone is interested, you can PM me, and I will get back to you.
Guys & Gals Get those Tutorials (SP) from Cadman.
He really puts it in a way that even I can understand.
I printed them out and have them in my shop notebook for quick reference.

Thnx - and totally agree - the technique is not for volume tiers...
Yeah I guess probably an average month I will do at least 1000 jigs and man I can't even imagine doing that even if I would like to. I love coming up with neat stuff for my customers as mush as anyone. That is what really drives me is doing something a little different and nice. Sometime I get into more than I bargained for too, LOL!
I do like the candy colors too, but having to coat them and cure them more than one time is a bit much. I would like to get a few more candy color though as I only have Orange right now. Seems a bit brittle though and not as tough as just regular powder paint. Have not tried Pro Tec's new candy colors though either as I got mine for a different Mfg. before they came out with so many.
Do you find they chip more unless you put some kind of clear coat over them?

Welcome to TJ's Tackle then to the powder paint section.
Skip,
This is my personal opinion on lead and powder painting. The harder the lead the harder it is to pour, however the better the paint keeps from chipping. Naturally pure lead is easy to pour, and you also get perfect pours, but if you drop a pure lead jig, you will see that it dents, because it is so soft. The paint will chip faster. Finally the best mix I found for good chip resistance is 50/50 mix of lead. I personally use over 30 different powder paint manufacturers, and I really don't worry about paint chipping. You will lose more jigs, before you have to worry about paint chipping. I also have all the current candy colors, and I don't really have any problems with them. Finally a good hard clearcoat does help the powder paint last longer.
Well never had trouble with paint chipping until I gave the candy powder a try. Had one head, not sure why, but had a couple of little spots where the paint came off. It was like it got hit and chipped off so I put a coat of Sally Henson's over it to control any more that may want to do that. I have painted a lot of jig head the last 3 years and never had a problem like this with any of it.

My theory on PP chipping is that they paint is not cured properly. This subject is a whole new post.
End up clear coating almost all my jigs, mostly to protect eyes (painted or applied), and/or to seal threads. More coats add some dimension to the jig.
I use Columbia Coating’s illusion paint for my translucent paint. Over my black diamond dust color it really lights up the holographic glitter. Do have CSI candy colors – but haven’t tried them yet.
Most my jigs are too small to worry about the lead denting. When getting into ¼ ounce and up, I go to the mix; my preference is a 75/25 or 80/20. Doing 1 ounce and up – 50/50. Lot of bass guys prefer the 50/50 for everything.
Skip I'm going to have to agree with Ledhed on this in the above post. I'm not saying you don't know what you are doing so don't get me wrong. I'm just trying to help you out. I personally don't paint a lot of crappie jigs, mostly 1/8 oz and up. Also I never ever go below a 50/50 mix. I like my jigs harder. Like LedHed said even a 75/25 mix or actually if you can pour a 100% hard, then your jigs will be like rocks. The only thing about 100% hard, is there are a lot of variables to consider, and this is too lenghty of a subject to cover here. I have painted many many colors on 1/4 oz and up jigs, and never had any issues with powder paint. The only issues I've ever had is with blending colors. Purple and yellow chartreuse are the worst. Actually the heavier the jig is the more it will have a tendency to chip. I have a suspicion that the paint is either bad( but that is rare) or it needs to be baked more. JMO
*****On a different subject, who do I ask in this forum to post free powder paint? Do I have to pay, and where do I post it. I have about 800lbs, and I'm giving it away, except for the cost of shipping/handling/insurance. Thanks for any help. You can PM me with the info if you would like****
Thanks for the Tutorial, it is well spoken. Try to put it to use next week, could you send me a catalog . Man I'm just's stick with painting, sounds like pouring is to much thinking, and I'm not good at thinking.
JH
Don't give up on the pouring - like anything you do - you can take it as far as you want.
Cadman you are way to generous with the paint. Cheapest you can find is ~$2/3 an ounce and you are giving it away?????
Cadman
Welcome! Glad to see you here.
UG
PS: What's the skinny on the paint offer?
LedHed and UG
I only have (4) colors which is textured powder paint. I would like to find where I can post all the info here, with out getting anyone upset. I have pics, info on it and appliction. The powder is free up to 8lbs. The only thing I want out of this is that if you want the paint, you have to pay for the shipping. It is listed on another site that I regularly post. Where do I post this in this site and is there a cost to post this. Once I find this info out I will post it. The powder is for anyone that wants it and follows the guidelines
Cadman
Think you have to geat a hold of slab.
I still have a bunch of that white you sent last year. Need to do some Baja jigs with it.
