Powder paint drops

I have been trying to powder paint my own jigs lately. I have been using fl. yellow on 1/32 and 1/64 oz jigs. I am following the directions on the jar of powder as close as I can tell to correct. They look great until I pull them out of the oven for curing. At that time about 1/3 of them have a bump on the bottom of the jig (makes a round head into an oblong head), and some have drops of paint on the pan underneath them.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? How do you fix that problem?

Sounds like the paint is a little thick and your baking temp is a little high. I usually bake them a little cooler and longer than the jars say to do.

yeah... go to a 'cooler' oven temp and check on them... keep note of the temp and when you first start seeing those drops and adjust as you go along.... hard part is maintaining some sort of consistency when you're painting the heads initially.... it's all trial and error until you get a pattern down!! stick with it!

I still get some of those at times, I've found that if you swish them back and forth when you put the head in the powder you don't get as much on it as doing a dip it straight in and pulling out. I also try to really stir the powder up before starting, I've noticed that after 8 or 9 jigs the powder can get packed back down. I'm with jbd on a little bit lower temp when curing.

Simple answer is too much paint!

Got to keep it fluffed and not leave it in the paint too long. Also don't heat it too long. Once you get all these steps down it will be easier.

I use an alcohol lamp to heat and for example on a 1/16 my normal is to heat for about a 6 count (maybe a 3 count for a 1/32 and 8 count for a 1/4) Then I dip it in the paint and swish it back and forth fast one time each way. Some colors take less time and some a tiny bit longer.

I do use a fluid bed, but it can be done without, but you have to fluff it every few jig heads. I know making you own is popular, but they never work as well as the ones you buy, also IMHO. Since I found his site buying the cups is less by a good bit too.

Of course you could always buy some of the things from TJ's that you put the jig head in upside down in the oven and any extra paint will then go down the hook or just buy a fluid bed from him as he is reasonable IMHO.

I use fluid bed only if i am going to do a lot and not just a few. I seldom bake later as i am not selling, only using.

Thanks guys, I made up about 45 yellow chart. heads lastnight, and cured them at about 250-275 for about an hour :eek: But thats because I went outside and forgot about them. They look great, no drops, and not burnt :D

i .WOULD'NT WORRY ABOUT CURING THEM UNLESS YOU'RE GOING TO SELL THEM BECAUSE THEIR GOING TO CHIP ANYWAY. THE FISH DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN APRETTY OR ULGLY JIG.

I cure mine at just under 250,,,,,,,,,I find that longer time makes a very durable finish..I like a finish that can hang on and take a beating....I use an old toaster oven i bought at a garage sale to bake mine.Hadn't made any jigs in years,,its getting that time again...I think i ll try to find me some of them fancy red hooks and make me a couple thousand...:)
