HB customer service agent wants to send me one to try, free. Hmmmm.

I have one hooked up to my interlink and I can't tell it helps at all. But If it's free, take it.
Well, I was thinking that the refresh rate has to do with how the computer is programmed inside the unit. I'm no expert, by any stretch of the imagination, but it sounded kinda odd to me.

Wiskers...that's what I thought but just needed some "expert" opinions.
Just got an e-mail from customer service. They are sending the puck so now I need to know the real deal. Are they sending me stuff that I don't need to appease me or will it really ework. I don't want to spend the time putting this puck on my boat if it's not gonna help.
Any more suggestions...CANEPOLE, Where are you?

Hound, the puck is what came with my unit. I have the same problems that everyone else is talking about. Slow response. I have mounted my Garmin 76csx next to the 997. i use the Garmin exclusively for close navigation and keep the 997 on sonar/si combo image. seems to work for me.
You are right in your thinking about refresh rate, that said take the puck & try it as it may help----if U have a unit with an internal ant, cause most internal units(Low&HB) have trouble with picking up satellites. Hooking up the puck will help U fix in on satellites better gaining accuracy & may help U get locked in sooner-- but will not help refresh rate.Quote:

I was using a older Etrex to do navigation but saw here a sale on Garmin 76map CSX, got that & man its great, Happy as a dog rolling in Horse sheet. Lot of Garmin hand held older model Etex & plain 76 being dropped for 09 but not Map 76CSX. Yep 997 only good for sonar/si images No sense in buying a 957 to go with 997 as its probably a sickiee like 997.
Let me start out saying that the HB people have been good to me. I really believe they have good intentions and will fix this problem.
I have a 797 on the console & a Matrix 87c on the bow. I bought a Interlink and hooked my 2 units together. When I mark something with the 797 I spin the boat and get pointed in the generall direction and us the GOTO function. This brings it up on my Matrix too. When I get within about 100' I move to the front and use the Matrix to get to my mark. Works pretty good but I would prefer the 797 work as advertised.
I tried an experiment with my 797. I hooked up to my boat and got my son to pull me out in the road in front of the driveway and stop. I marked the spot with the 797. I then had him drive down the road and turn around and head back to the driveway. All this time I setting behind the console. I hit the goto button and had him start driving at about 5 mph toward the driveway. The road I was on is straight as a string. My coursr projection line was jumping all over the place. If I had followed it I would have been in my buddy's corn field in 100'.
I've seen all these others claim there is no problem with their units and they work fine. That might be. But don't condemn us and talk down to us for speaking out about our problems. Their units might be right. But don't tell me I don't know how to use mine.
A lot of those guys give Canepole a hard time about this stuff. Hey, I've met the guy and I can assure you he ain't no dummy. If he told me the world was square I'd think twice before I called him a liar.
Not bragg'n, but I run a boat bigger than just about anybody here. Right now I'm faced up to 1200' (6 barge lenghts) of tow and have another 168' of boat behind that. I just landed my tow in shut out fog below Savannah, Tn. on radar & GPS and when my head landed, I was within 20' of the tie-off wire (marked on my chart with the GPS). When this thing says you're there you're there. Let's see some of the na-sayers try that. If I had tried that with my 797 I'd be chasing barges right now.
Back to the subject. About the only difference I can tell with the puck is my unit picks up the sats. a little quicker. The refreshs rate is the same.
Like I said, I believe the HB folks will figure something out. I really do. I'm not b!&ch'n at the customer service guys, their hand are tied. They didn't build the things they just gotta deal with the crap.
I think you're right Wiskers. I may just buy me a handheld and be done with it. Guess I will mount this new "toy" on my boat and see if I can "knock" it off in a few fishing trips. LOL!

I sure hope U are right Wiskers, would make me dam happy to see 997 working properlyQuote:

He said he was going fishing yesterday if everything went right. Brenda went through a little spell but I believe she is on the mend. I was thinking the same thing though...Canepole has been uncommonly quiet.

It still not gonna fix your response problem. HB will fix it sooner or later maybe. If we were bass men complaining, it would be fixed already. However, we just peon crappie guys and dolls.
I just resign to using my Garmin. I bought an extra mount and move the Garmin front to back. It is dead on. No second passes. I am use to using it and know it intimately.:p Confidence is the key.
No one from Humminbird showed up to meet my challenge about trolling. Too bad. They missed a chance at a good good fishing trip... I guess I just ain't got no clout.;) They still welcome though.
Brenda is fine John. She will have some minor outpatient surgery the 3 of Dec.
Thanks for the concern.
Tom
Well, I'm glad to hear that she is doing well. I had no idea until I talked to Paul. Kepp me informed and if there is anything I can do just let me know.
I know how you feel about the Garmin. I just hate to tear my boat apart...AGAIN to switch everything out.
The Hound
Because they are afraid of what you will FIND wrong with it! Duuuh! :D That's a kin to asking the devil to come spend the night with ya.
Should I put it on my boat? YES or NO ;)
The Hound
Cool. I'll give it a try. One more question should I mount it on the front of the boat since that is where the unit is and that's where I want to mark brushpiles, stumps, and ledges. If I put it at the back of the boat the Gps will be reading from back there and not up front...correct.
I get any more stuff up front I'm going to need a car rackmounted to my boat. :D

I agree with the simple fact that most here have stated. Use the HB for SI and keep the Garmin for accurate guidance to where your going. I do hope that HB will fix the issue but I'm not sure it will be for the units already sold.
I really do enjoy all the knowledge shared on this site, and I do agree that HB customer service is much more helpful than the big companies that have their customer service in another country. I had a issue with interference from my trolling motor and they sent out a kit to get rid of the issue. They were nice and helpful but after only three fishing trips with my new 797 GPS I knew I couldn't rely on the HB to get me there. I'll keep the Garmin mounted next to it.
Thanks to all for the effort with HB to fix what we paid our money for and hopefully they will do the right thing.
Oh, believe you me I have a Garmin and that dog will hunt! I waiting on Miss Congeniality(HB) to get herself together. LOL!
