Just a question to see how folks are rigging their Ky rigs and Capps and Coleman rigs.
On these two-jig (or hook) rigs, do you:
1. Rig both upper and lower with the same jig/bait and use it to see where the fish are by varying the depth (distance between the jigs)?
or...
2. Rig a different jig/bait on the upper and lower positions to see which lure/bait the fish want?
I have been rigging with the same jig/bait upper and lower but I think I am going to change my rigs up.

I won't vote because I haven't had much success with it. Their's nothing worse than having to tie two more on when you break the main line. I do love the poll, because I would like to be more succesful at it. Maybe someone is feeling gracious and explain why they do what they do.
I use the C&C rig only. I will use different set ups on all poles. No I don't keep the same set ups on top and bottom. I use a variety of baits so that with 5 poles out I'll have 10 different baits for them to choose from. If I see a pattern I will change half of the rods to this bait. That way when they change their behavior, I will not have to change all baits. Been finding a lot of fish liking road runner head with minnow through lips on bottom of line only. I also only use them on the outside rod holders because they get the most movement in a turn.
I have the book about Capps and Coleman and read every article I can find on them. Do they still use the double rig all the time or do they use a single jig a lot. I use their favorite color and it's awesome on this stained lake! Midsouth Super Jigs 1105GL ;)

I put a jig on top on one and on the bottom on the other rod.
I may start off with a 1/32 on the top and a 1/16th on the bottom fishing under a slip float. The top may be hair and the bottom a tube. The top may be pink and chartreuse and the bottom may be black and chartreuse. The point is what you fish and how you fish it depends on the weather conditions, daylight conditions, wave conditions and the mood of the crappie. Whatever you fish, you should be fishing it slower than you are and the crappies will tell you what they prefer for those conditions.
If I use a double set up they are different and usually different color as well as size.
I use this in the spring most when the wind is up a little and don't want to long line troll. Then I put a 1/8 or 1/4 on the bottom and either a 1/32 or 1/16 on top.

I use different colors on all hooks until I see some pattern. I tend to put tubes on the upper and something with more action on the lower. I catch more fish on the lower but there are times they go after either or both. I love doubles. I usually use a 1/32 with a 1/24 or two 1/32. I put out 6 rods.
Someone mentioned having to retie 2 hooks everytime they hung up. What I do is have my C&C rigs pre tied and wrapped around a piece of swimming pool noodle. I put a snap swivel on the end of my main line. That way when I hang up and break off I can put on a new rig in a matter of seconds and be back fishing. I also use 10 lb. line for my main line and 6 lb. line for my rigs. That way I will break off part of the rig and not my main line. Hope this helps.
I tie both of my jigs on with a double loop knot leaving about an inch of loop for action and to keep the upper jig away fromthe line. Jigs are about18 inches apart. Re-tying is fast unless you get several lines broke at the same time.
...to keeping the frustration level down to a minimum. Pre-making the rigs is a GOOD idea. I think I'm gonna start doing that. I like to relax when I fish, not work myself into a frenzy. That's why I limit myself to two rods whil still fishin'...and a max of three if trollin'--one on port, starboard and one in the lap.Quote:

I haven't had much time put in with double jigging but I am planning on doing it more often. When I have had results I would put a jig one size larger on bottom so that it runs smoother without the exact same weight ratio.
Same thing here. I keep several tied up with different weights from 1/4 to 3/4 ounce weights and I put the smallest cross lock snap I can find on end of dropper 6pm line that way I can change jigs or go to plain hook and minnow quickly. Break off one takes about a minute to be back fishing with that pole. Have not seen any difference in bites with snap or no snap.Quote:

When fishing from shore, I'll put 1 rod out with a stand out hook and minnow and a 1/32, 1/64 or 1/80th hair jig under it. I like this setup under a float when there isnt much wind/waves and I have to cater to my 4 yr old.

Not voteing because i have alway used a single jig and only one pole but have read some good post on here and might have to give it a try......great post and advice.

I use 2 per rod while tightlining. I'm tying 2 snap swivels 18" apart on the main line, top one is tied with a palomar knot after attaching the bottom. I keep a couple pieces of pvc wrapped in insulation with a few dozen jigs pretied(loop knots on the top and the jig). About 1/2 the jigs are tied on 8"-12" leaders and lighter jigheads, the other 1/2 a little longer and some heavier. The bottom swivel gets a bass caster type weight, (most often 1oz for 12-20' trolling, and 2oz for deeper/windier conditions), then one of the jigs on the longer leaders. The top gets the shorter leaders/lighter jigheads. I can easily change or replace jigs for color or weight and I'm fishing 2 depths, 2 colors and 2 sizes of jigs on each of 4-6 rods.
I rarely break off anything other than the bottom jig. The 2 heads I like to use on the bottom are Charlie Brewer Sliders, and for really muddy water something with a spinner like a Roadrunner. I don't lose nearly as many Sliders as spinner jigs. Top jigs most often get smaller plastic and catch about 1/3rd of the fish, but as often as not the fish are larger than what I'm taking on the bottom jigs. If one color pattern stands out I change most everything to that color pattern, or as close as I can get, but still try to keep the top jig body smaller.
The biggest problem I get with this setup is tangles, that's why the shorter/lighter top jigs, and have also found that it's easier on old eyes to tie the jigs on as many different color lines as possible, and always different from the hi-vis mainline. It's not tough for me to do that cause I almost always have a few spools of this or that lying around. This way it's easy for me to follow the lines to untangle. I don't pay that much attention to the test of the leaders, anything between 4 & 10 seems to yield the same results. I started out with ~18" leaders but the tangles prompted me to go shorter and I haven't noticed a difference in the number of fish I'm catching.
#10 might be a little heavy for for leaders considering I'm using #6 as a main line, but I find most often the hooks bend out before the line breaks. I have broken a couple rod tips even with the #6 so I'm leery about going to #10, rather lose a whole rig and have to retie than to break a rod tip.
I think that C&C fishes a double hook rig in water over 6 or 7 feet. Water shallower than that they go to a single jig. That's what they said at the Grizzly Jig seminar. I use a 2 hook rig and have spares wrapped on swimming pool noodles. I also have single hooks pre-tied to a leader which I stick in the end of a noodle and lay the leaders the length of the noodle then wrap with scotch tape. If I loose a single hook. I replace the leader and hook. If more damage than that, I replace the whole rig.
If you are going to use a double rig, get some of Grouseflys double duce's...........

I've tried lighter line...but I can tell no difference in catch rates by using heavier line....
Fewer break offs means more bait time in the strike zone....

all the ponds i fish are shallow woth the deepest water bein around 15. ill just longline with a 1/32 witha grub on the bottom and a red #6 tru-turn on top with either a minnow or tube. im gonna try the baby shad this weekend
When spider rigging I'm hanging meat so both hooks are the same (if using doubles). I mostly troll (longline) and only pull 1 jig to the line to help keep down some of those nasty tangles.

Well I guess most of you are in boats but from the bank I use a 8ft pole casting 2 1/32 jigs diffferent colors. Depending on the pattern I may switch to the same colors if the fish are only hitting on of the colors. My thinking behind it is maybe the fish think the jigs are one fish chasing the other. I have been using this for yrs now and I noticed it has caught on in my fishing area. Nice to be a trend setter. LOL If its not broke don't fix it that. My motto

In Miss. We can spider with 5 poles on most coe lakes and 3 on 1 of the coe lakes. I use 10 different jigs till the fish tell me what they want. That can change several times through out the day.Give it a tryand let the fish decide.If the bite slows down, switch till you start catchin them again.

I'll put a jig and may tip it with a minnow on the bottom but always just a hook or one of the crappielogic gnats on the top. I do use pinch on weights though so I can just take one off and add either a heavier or lighter one based on my needs changing on the water with the wind and waves
Interesting search rig I use is a light (1/32 oz.) Custom Jigs & Spins Shirmpo pink/white and a single hook minnow. The hook has to be gold and tru-turn to work the best.
I use a double with different colors and sizes.
