Has anyone been fishing Konawa lately?
Sorry, never been there.
Ive never even heard of this lake.
I used to fish Konawa for Bass in the wintertime. Never seen or heard of a Crappie caught there.
Fished it for years when it was a new lake. I have caught 100's of crappie out if it. We targeted the crappie on the North end along and around surmerged pond dams. There are 4 that I know about on the north and northwest end or discharge side of the lake. There is also an old road bed west of the discharge channel that usually holds some good crappie in the winter as well.......Good Luck Ranger
Wow, Mark. I'm going to make a special trip to go looking! I never specifically targeted Crappie there because a guide (bass) told me they weren't there. I also have never heard them mentioned in any state fishing report for Konawa. I've caught about everything else there by accident when bass fishing. I've already identified a couple of road beds and about half a dozen ponds from Navionics. If I can find some Crappie I may have a new winter fishing spot for them. It's about half the distance that Eufaula is for me.
Floyd I haven't fished it in years, but back in the late 70's and early 80's there were plenty to go around if you could keep those Green Carp from biting you........Ranger
Think I'm going to go down and look around with the Lowrance this evening.
Here's what I found from the latest ODWC 5 year wildlife management plan (2010)
"Crappie (Pomoxis spp.) had virtually disappeared from this lake in past years, probably due to elevated water temperatures. However, a few have been collected in recent surveys perhaps because of lower water temperatures due to a decrease in power generation"
Still think I'll drive down this evening and look around - better than sitting home.
Getting ready to head home. Couldn't buy a Crappie but did enjoy fighting off all the others.
I hadn't been on that lake in a few years. I like the looks of it - just wish it had some decent Crappie...Oh, well.
The crappie in Lake Konawa have been an excellent food source for the bass, which decimate any fish except large catfish.
lake konawa being a power plant lake is a great bass lake fishing during the winter months there since water temperature is warm , the discharge channel is great for catching hybrid striped bass and grass beds for the largemouth bass. as for crappie i've caught a few from it but not alot, like stinkfinger said probably are the source of food for the bass in lake which explains why they are so big
