These SI units costs $$. Humminbird refurbished units costs $$. If Humminbird sells these "refurb units, then they oughta offer trade in on SI refurb units. I be glad to be the first trade in customer. I got a 797, like to trade in on 997 refurb.

It is a neat idea to take trade-ins on these units when buying a newer/better model. The problem I see is a business owner may only be able to offer 30% or so of the retail price on trade-in. He would have to refurbish the unit and try to sell it for 60% or so of retail to keep from losing his butt in the deal and stay competitive with the open market.
they use to take trade ins up till about five years ago. i traded an old one for a matrix 35 for about $140 difference saved about $300 john

I am surprised that there is no secondary market for this type equipment. There is a strong secondary market in laptops, etc. These sonars, etc, are by far now more expensive than most laptops.Quote:

Yep CP, like we've talked about before, if you do buy one of the high end
units used, you're treated like a second-class citizen, can't register it in
your name for upgrades, etc. Manufactures will correct me I imagine if
this is not still the case.
Anything costing over a $1000 at least should
have a transferable warranty and be serviced for at least 10 years.
(in my silly opinion anyhow)
They do offer a trade program CP. They've got this cool deal where they'll trade you an 1187 for 20 benjamins. :)
Personally, I think it's crazy to pay $2K for a fish finder, that's like a whole tank of gas we're talking about. :(

You can register it and get upgrades (HB). But, you can't transfer warranties. Sux. Lowrance and garmin don't require registration for there fish unit upgrades.Quote:

at one time. They should still do the warranty deal.

Instead of fooling around with a trade in program. Why not offer your old unit for sale here or on Ebay ? Thats what I have done as I worked my way up through the Vexilar Models for ice fishing.
Right now I am satisfied with the performance of my 987C and 797C. I have no inclination to upgrade. I think what you can get on the open market would far surpass any trade-in value.
