You can find some lakes that the river is not in right now. There are still some that the river is still in though.
I just called the refuge office and they said that they roads through the refuge are still closed, so it would be hard to get to alot of lakes right now.
is jones lake accessible yet
Are you talking about Little Jones lake around Ethel?? If so, I don't think you can get there by driving because the gate at Ethel is still closed. You may be able to get there by boat. I have never got in there by boat, but I know I have got real close before. It would be a major pain to do though.
Wing.......Can you keep us posted on the gates this week please? I am thinking of making the trip this weekend if they are open. thanks in advance.
thanks for the info winghunting that is the lake i am talking about.
I will keep yall updated. If I had to guess as to how long until they will open the gates, I would say another month or so. Seems like the refuge is always slow about doing stuff.
I heard that it will be at least a month because the river is still out on the south end and over some of the roads.
Well, with the river at St. Charles being 22.31 ft. today, the road through the north unit is for the most part dry. I am pretty sure that I have drove down the road at 22 ft. before without any problem. I know it needs to be around 24 ft. to close it. The South unit road should be dry except for a low spot or two. Last I heard, the refuge was assessing the damage to the road due to the flood and fixing what they needed to fix. I don't know why they are so worried about the roads now. They never have been before. They always let the roads go to He!!. I thought I have lost few front ends driving down those refuge roads before.
Expect a slight rise as they dump more water from the upstream lakes. I wouldn't expect much change before fall.
Its been a year or two since I've been to Jones lake, but I don't remember a gate on that road. As of Monday, the north unit road at Hwy 1 is open, but still has water over the road in spots. The south unit road (the higher road) to Long Lake is open and Jacks Bay rd and Levee B rd are also open.
Since the Miss. river is on the rise, the water should be backing up the
White causing the southern end of the refuge to remain flooded or even get deeper. Plus all the water coming down from the lakes in N. Ar. So, its probably going to be a while yet.
OK....I did some checking yesterday. Jones Lake is accessible right now. Water from the bayou/river is still in the lake. You might have a hard time launching, but it is accessible. A good friend of mine lives and farms in deep Ethel, and he said all the refuge roads are still closed (North and South Unit). I haven't been down there to see for myself, so Waterturkey could be right if he has been down there to see them open with his own two eyes.

Here is where you can find updates on roads.
Any New Info On Road Openings Near Ethel?
Rieve, the only roads open on the South unit are Jacks bay Rd and B levee road. Everything around Ethel is still closed. I was down there a couple days ago and the gates at Ethel are still closed. The Mississippi river is starting to fall pretty good, so it shouldn't be too much longer before the lower white starts falling. I also put a boat in down at Weber the other day you can still go about anywhere you want to go. We rode up Essex, Brooks, Lagrue and Prairie bayou's and the water was still out in the woods everywhere we went.
they updated the list of roads that opened today at the refuge web site
thanks for letting everyone know 501rod. they finally opened the ethel road so i guess i'll have to give it a try.
I heard from a buddy yesterday that the lakes down on the refuge had cleared up and were looking good, at least the ones that he looked at.
Winghunting......Did he happen to mention which lakes? My brothers and I will be staying at maddox bay this weekend. Do you live close to there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)
He said he went and looked at H lake and a few others and they were looking pretty good. I have not heard much of anything about Maddox Bay recently, so I really cannot help you out much there and I don't know of anyone that has fished any of the refuge lakes, yet.
Thank you Sir. My bet is that Escronges should be fishable too. We might also try some of those lakes on Maddox Bay that are normally hard to get to this time of year but maybe will be an exception this time. Heard a strong rumor that the road to Kansas lake on the North Unit will open tomorrow.
i've have caught some nice green carp out of H lake.
winghunting let us know if you hear any reports.
Will do
