I probably wont list enough to cover everybody but wondered what is your choice for your #1 bait when bream fishing.

I probably wont list enough to cover everybody but wondered what is your choice for your #1 bait when bream fishing.
This is a trick poll. Here in Louisiana I use crickets for gills and small crawfish (under 1 inch) for chinqapins (crackers);)
Maggots are easily #1. Mealworms would be a distant second.
Flick tail jig.I have made a believer out of more than a few who went with me.Come to think about it I have not been outfished while using my jig and my best buddy alway's use's redworm's.Not enough room on my rig for a maggot lol.
I've used crickets for gills but they dont seem to stay on the hook long enough so most times it's dug up worms from home for me.
I pretty much use waxies year round along with a grizzly jigs.
I like using tiny cranks the most, but I'm not claiming it is the most effective at all.
I'm just a diehard cricket guy but I've been thinking about expanding my horizens and trying some of these other baits ya'll been talking about.
Bluegill
If they wont hit a small jig, which i think you catch bigger gills on, then i break out the red worms, and the peacock float.
My favorite for bream and crackers is a small tube jig followed by crickets if necessary.:)
Tip a 1/64 oz Popeye feather jig with a nice white or
chartruse crappie nibble...and hang on ! :)
But crickets always seem to produce, too...if you are out
of nibbles. ;)
This is what i use............

Jigs are cheap and lots cleaner than live baits.:D
Here is mine a 1/64 oz leadhead with pink trout worm. If they don't hit good try adding a Crappie Nibble.

I usually use some type of jig (plastic, hair or ice jig) tipped with a maggot or 2.Sometimes i use nibbles or gulp maggots or waxies.
I forgot I use a fly(wooly worm type I tie, though not as fancy) tipped with a maggot.I use these with a casting bubble(clear),slow retrieve or let them sit.
live bait will get the numbers, artificals will get the better fish. my pref. is a beetlespin
I am stuck on crickets.. Less mess than worms.

I'm not so sure. My biggest gill (12") and my biggest shellcracker (13") both came on live bait. The law of averages says the more fish you catch, the greater the chance you will get a big fish.
I think artificials take larger average fish because most artificials are too big for small fish.
these are by far my two favorites for both gills and specks.. with the nitro trailers you can see we only use about half of the original bait, for some reason we have had far better luck that way than using the entire thing. all I know is these work, most of the picks i post here are caught on these two baits from ice out until it starts to freeze over. that is this year any ways ,, last year it was the mister twister exude micro shad but they are not really wanting it this year, dont know why .
artificials,i catch more big ol biguns on artificials, flies of course i do not jig fish for gills or chinks.
but i must admit i have caught well on live bait when i could not get anything to take any flies in my box.
My favorite for numbers, crickets.
Size: Crawfish, one to two inches is perfect.
I also love mini crankbaits and any small jig.
I use worms. Catfish will go after them too. I got two containers of worms at Walmart to go fishing today. They were awful. I don't think there were 30 worms in box and the dirt is really--well yucky. It feels like dirt from a slag pile. Earlier this year they had worms from Canada and they were great.
Anyway, once it gets hot I switch to crickets.
Keep 11 bluegill/crackers today. Caught about 30. We started keeping only the ones that were over 7".
One catfish--16"

I like using a micro hair jigs . or plastics

When I lived in Indiana I had the best results from wax worms, In florida it was the little red wigglers, now in Tennesee it's been crickets. Tried other baits in each area with limited success. Conclusion for me was use what they like best in each area.
1/32 oz jig, chart head, black squirrel tail body, tipped with a wax worm.
WORMS WORK BEST FOR ME BUT PEFER ARTIFICALS WHEN THEY ARE BITING GOOD, LOVE CLEAN HANDS. lol lol :D
I like a small jig tipped with a crappie nibble or cricket under a small float.
Red worms have worked best for us.
I would like to figure out a solid performing artificial in Florida for panfish, but when I try I catch as many buck bass as blue gill.
Best artificial i've used was a blakemore road runner with a green/chart tube and crappie nibbles squirted up inside it. Caught more bass with it than pan fish though :P.
I prefer to use artificial lures, mostly home-brewed jigs, #0 Mepps spinners, small grubs, or tiny crankbaits like Rebel's Crickhopper, but for catching numbers, redworms and crickets (or small grasshoppers) get the nod.

I can not believe no one has mentioned the keystone minnow. Excellent bait for gills and crackers. They use to make a bait called a tator bug that was awesome. I have not seen one in years and heard they are no longer made but I do not know.
I have reall good luck with 1/16 oz jig head and add jig spinner. Attach small black grub. Looks like a beetle spin but I think they are cheaper to make. Bluegill and crackers attack viciously. Casts a mile on 4lb line, so you can stay away from bed too.:D
Simple for Bluegill it's crickets here and for shellcrackers it;s red wigglers all day long.
My favorite is a black mini microspoon tipped with a couple maggots, fished under a bobber. Second is a black ant that grandpa bob makes. I fish it tightline. Add a waxworm or few maggots and cast and let it fall into the beds. Third is a green and black 1/32 popeye hair jig. I can catch gills in any water i fish with these three baits. This year i've tied my own hair jigs. Will report back after i give them a try.
chaunc, we use to catch those black ants live right off the trees and slap them on a hook and BAM, the gills would kill them, great bait.
Enough with live bait, real men use white or firetiger rooster tails! :p
