does anyone noodle cats on here?
Now this is going to be a good thread.I have only been once and it was in a river.I had the time of my life.I did'nt actually catch one. They used me to block the hole's and they did the noodling.Im not sure I could stick my hand in there anyway.
Before it became so popular here in AR, my son and I did a lot of noodling on the local lake--caught lots of cats using small bream as bait. Great technique if you can find your noodles among all of the hundreds of others now. We used brightly colored swim noodles but into about 12" sections, with black trotline cord, with 2 or 3 drop lines off main line with weight on bottom.
I thought he was asking about hand grabbing,my bad.
wrong noodles guys im talking about the hand method sorry i was not more clear
i guess it depends on where u live and what u call it .noodling, grabbling, hogging well the guys i go with call it noodling.i went last june for the first time on percy preist in tn.the first cat that came out of the hide weighed 32pounds i was thinking theres no way u can catch fish like this boy was i wrong 14 cats and 4 hrs. later we had a total of between 280lbs and320lbs. were about to go again soon and hopefully wear em out again
I'll pass.My hands isnt going nowhere I cant see.
When a snappin turtle latches on to you,you will not be wanting to noodle again lol
Were you catchin or blocking? I was the same as you,boy can they get em.They would go down the bank's and feel for a hole or sandy place. When they said to block the hole we would sit with our leg's around one another and the guy would go in and most time's would have the fish.I had one hit me as it came out,it got away. The most fun I ever had.
Where are the Oklahoma boys?
the places that we were catching them was made out of flat rocks stacked to make a box with a opening on one end and yes someone had to help block the hole while someone else goes under the water to feel for the cat
^^^^^^
There's a group of us that do it around here. It's a blast.
Season starts up next weekend, matter of fact. I think the water is a bit cool for holes yet but we'll be out there anyway.
The mechanic's gloves like I'm wearing in the avatar makes it a whole lot easier on your hands.
I would not be afraid of the fish but the thought of a turtle or snake, now that's what would have me nervous.I have been a hole blocker but cant seem to stick my hand in there. They laughed hard at me but I still got 10 finger's lol.
I've got an ex brother-in-law that does it all the time. I have no desire to try it. To me, it's like asking to be a Darwin Award recipient. You know how nothing good comes after someone says....."Hey Ya'll, Watch This!".
Give enough beer to a redneck and they will try any thing lol! But not this one. Its fun to watch.
No can do in Texas...game wardens kinda look down on that sort of fishing method...bout as bad as snagging.
Grubby, I agree it can be pretty fun to watch. There's a documentary out there called OKIE NOODLING, don't know that it paints an accurate picture of the average Oklahoman, but it's got some hard-core noodlers in it.
alright boys went noodling today at percy priest and here are some pics that i took of my cousin and the guys we go with
Sweet.Do you get the meat on top of the head of the bigger one's?
Theres still guys around here in Indiana that noodle for snapping turtles. Hard to beat turtle soup but if I had to noodle for it I would make mock soup. I use a trot line to catch mine generally catch some catfish as a bonus. Now I bet there are a lot of folks reading this that never heard of Turtle soup. Must be a german thing not sure but don't knock it if you haven't tried it.
I cant get past fried turtle to try it in soup.
Yup Fried turtle is very good.
No noodling for this guy!! Snakes and turtles....no thanks...I do have a question..how do you clean a turtle?
Wash his belly and back and rub his neck with a rag
I could'nt resist that one 49.Grab his head with plyer's and cut it off.Insert a waterhose in the neck and pull the skin up over it and let the water pressure go.That will loosen the skin around the turtle.Cut all foot area off.Lay the turtle on it's back and with a sharp knife begin to cut the seam that will seperate the bottom shell from the top. After that remove bottom shell and cut the skin away and work the meat out. There are other way's im sure that's how I do it.
NP on the first reply Slipped Cork...I laughed
Is this one of them eatin turtles? He was C&R btw....

dbl post
You released some fine eating there treed. That's ok because the next person that might catch him will have a good time.
Found him in a creek about 3 foot wide in a small pool about 2' deep. Struck me odd
There is nothing like hand grabbing as us missippi boys call it. The most exciting way to catch big catfish as far as I am concerned. We usually start the end of may or the first of june depending on the water level and temp in the river. We fish about an hour and half south of memphis. To date the biggest fish we have caught is a 92 lb flathead and a 75 lb blue cat and a 40 lb white river. We average anywhere from 12 to 18 fish a trip. Usually the fish average around 30-35 pounds. I love it. Hey, mudbug you get down this way five me a holler and we can get together and catch a big ole cat.
will do if i ever get a chance
looks like you come out on top in them wrestling matches. good looking photos and some great eatin in hand...
all my fish were released for another day, this was the first time i had ever done it and was pretty cool indeed, HOWEVER once i found out that these people KNOW where the fish are all the time it took some of the excitment away.....any of these "movies" you see are planned and they know where the fish are because the "holes" are planted there with barrells and wooden boxes sunk in the bank so that the fish stay in there......they can go catch the same fish day after day
We release 90%+ of our fish.
I can tell you with absolute certainty... you are not going to catch the same fish out of the same hole day after day. Another fish may move in to take it's place but the odds of the same fish being in the same hole is pretty much slim to none.
Of course the people that do this know where the holes are. How long do you think it would have taken you to find a single hole if they didn't know where they were? Not a single one of our holes was placed there by us. Every one of them are natural spawning holes. Yes, we had to find them. It took a few years to find all of the holes that we know of now and we find more every year. However, if we had the time, money and inclination to make our own boxes... we would be doing that as well.
I'm still sticken to the rod and reel with my butt in a boat!! and leave all that noodlin fun for you guys!! :)
