Anybody ever catch many of these little critters? Talk about aggressive!
I was playing around with my bait caster with a 2" bass popper, and caught 4" and a 6" green sunfish. Those little fish smacked that popper like a bass!!!
Mostly we only get bluegill and pumpkinseeds around here- in fact these were the first two green sunfish I've ever caught (in 40 years of fishing!).
Anyhow, I'm just curious if anyone else has caught greens and noticed how aggressive they are.

LOL! Nope, I could hear that dah-dah, dah-dah jaws music and wouldn't dare. They'da probably ate the neoprene from my waders and had my wader britches for desert. I would probably be able to make it to shore before they started munching on me, but I'd have a hard time explaining running up the shore without britches! :)Quote:

catch alot of them in arkansas. i fish for smallmouth in small rivers during the hot summer july and augest.they will hit when nothing will get them on a crawdad crak and poppers
They're pretty much considered a nuisance fish, in KY. Don't really grow all that big, and tend to crowd out some of the more desirable Sunfish. I happen to have one ... as a pet :p I've had it in my aquarium for better than a year. He gets moody every now & then, but for the most part ... he can suck a whole nightcrawler down, in one gulp :DQuote:

About the only fish that will hit a jig any faster or harder than a Green Sunfish ... is a Warmouth. And they'll hit jigs/baits that are bigger ... I don't know how many I've had hit a crankbait, plastic worm, or bass sized jig ... & then send them flying over the boat, on hookset :p
KY's State Record Green Sunfish is 1lb 5oz ... caught in 2000 from a pond. (And I bet he was the "MacDaddy" of that pond, until then ... LOL!! )

Anybody have a picture of one of these things? I don't think I've ever seen one.

We have green sunfish in some sections of our local canal. They relate to wood and often right on the bank. They will get in a little pocket under a log and slam anything that gets close.

We target them in smaller rivers and then stock a pond with them. We se them for catfish bait on trotlines because they are the perfect size and they will stay alive longer than any other bluegill or sunfish will. They are very aggressive and easy to catch.
CP I used a warmouth to catch a 68lb flathead.I know where a pond that is full of them and they seem to live very good.We set 4 line's and had 600 warmouth for bait.Fished for 4 day's and on the 4th day it was on.One line had 68lb,32lb ,one hook broke and had another 3 15lb flathead's on.We caught them on nolin.
I didn't know we even had them in NY until last week when I caught 2 of them a day apart on different lakes. I've been fishing here in Upstate NY for right around 40 years now, and never caught them before. My first thought was that they were a warmouth, and I know that warmouth aren't listed as a freshwater fish of NY, so I wrote to a DEC Biologist who had me google green sunfish images and sure enough that's what I had caught.
Aggressive? You should have seen those itty-bitty fish smack my bass popper. You'd have thought they were 4lb smallies!

Joe that's a big flathead bait right there!String 50 of those on a trotline and youre bound to catch a biggun.

This is one from last summer on a noodle using Green Sunfish for bait.
Catch them all the time. Some places around here have tons of them. To me they are nuisance when bluegill fishing as the green sunfish will take the bait before the bluegill has time to look at it. Very aggressive fish.
Wow, i didnt know about these things. i had caught one here in the st.johns river a few weeks ago, it had me thinking it was half bass/half bream. i called it a weird looking bass and tossed it back.
Here inAR they are a trash/nuicance fish. Especially in the aquaculture ponds. On the ponds where I work, they can get to filletable size and a few of the guys I work with will fillet and eat them. I have not, but they say they are ok eating.

Rice slicks and are poison for a small bass pond. Egg eating machines. small pond with slicks will soon be way out of balance.
yes you can eat them. I catch big ones from time to time in the spawn and even fillet them up like a bluegill.
They have great color when they spawn
