Little black demons
 Has anyone found anything that keeps the gnats away? I tried everything I can think of to keep them away and nothing works for more than a couple of minutes. People keep telling me skin-so-soft works but I tried it and it didn't faze them. Cigarette smoke knocks them back but a guy can't smoke constantly. I'm about to decide a head net might be the way to go. If anyone has found something that works please let me know as those things are putting a real damper on the fishing.

I bought a thermacell today but havent tried it yet. I mix a little vanilla extract with skin so soft ...they still buzz around but dont bite. Good luck they do ruin a day.
-
I agree...they're horrible this year. Turns out I'm allergic to them, too, so I've got some nice welts today. Had a guy tell me that they don't like fabric softener sheets, so I put one of those in my hat, but they were still all over me. Bug spray didn't touch them. Smoke was the only thing that would keep them away for a while, and I went through 2 packs yesterday :(

Bug nets and long sleeves work on Toledo Bend. I have also purchased a Themacell but have yet to use it. Will have the nets on standby though.

I was told about this mixture yesterday. I havent used it yet but my buddies fished Dardenale last week and said it worked.
Listerene and Water a 50/50 mixture. Put it in a spray bottle. Spray it all over you, and just rub it around your ears, eyes, neck. They said it was a miracle potion. TOP SECRET TOO, so dont tell anyone;)

Turkey hunting head net works good.

I have been told that dabbing vanilla extract on you and your clothes will keep them from biting. My dad has tried it this year and said that it works well for him

listerine
I have the tried the listerine in a spray bottle at home around on my back deck
when I'm bbqing and it seems to work fine. I use it full strength & its cheap to use. It don't have to be a name brand. I don't have gnats, so I don't know if it will work for them also. Try it full strength & spray it all over & around you while you're fishing.

To be so small the have a ''BIG bite!:(

therma cell
OK tried my therma cell today...dont waste your money! I think they swarmed closer to it. I let it run for about 2 hours at the front of my boat and my buddy was laughing with a cigg. in his mouth saying I had a black cloud around my head! Put my skin so soft and vanilla mixture on and drove them back to him ;) Still get a few brave ones every so often but didnt get any more bites. Cant stand them bites ,I swell up like I have been beat to death. BTW didnt find any crappie on Ozark pool of the river but caught a few bass.

I took my 6 yr. old grandson fishing today. I was worried the gnats would be too much for him so I threw in some head nets. I also made up a spray bottle of 50/50 Listerine and water like brookz recommended....as soon as it got warm enough for them to come out I sprayed it on both of us.....worked like a charm. I was impressed to say the least. We ended up having a great day and catching fish and was hardly bothered at all, just reapplied every hour to hour and a half. I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate the heads up on the " top secret formula" but a Big Thanks is a start!

I think they bother some folks more than others. I've been out a lot, and while others complain about the gnats, they haven't bothered me. I guess I just stink too much! I had heard about the skin so soft for mosquitoes one time. Turns out all we had in the boat was Skin So Soft in the middle of the White River bottoms. We had the softest mosquitoe bites you ever saw:D

gnats
I cleaned 34 crappie Sunday & the flies came around & I sprayed listerine full strength & they disapeared. I sure hope it works on yellow jackets when they start this fall.

I second the vanilla extract. I learned this from my grandfather and I have been using it for over 30 years and it works for me. :D

Citrus
