Me and my son went fishing sun.afternoon,we fish from the bank,with redworms and caught some nice shellcracker's and bluegill's,
He caught this fish and I have no ideal what it is,anybody care to say?

might be a golden shiner
looks like a shiner or a shad to me hard to tell from the angle and distance.

Yea, I'd have to say its a Shiner. Haven't caught one of those in awhile. The last one I caught was a Hamburg State Park.
Bluegill
Looks like a Golden Rod(Golden Shiner) to me.We catch quite a few of them up here.
Golden shiner, we catch alot of those on wax worms bluegill fishing here in Indiana.
I caught 1 yesterday,I'ts a shiner.They are spawning in my area and they are very pesky.Good cut bait for catfish.That's what happen's when ya dump your minnow bucket in your favorite small reservoir or lake.
i would have never guessed shiner i would love to have a live well full of those for flathead bait nice catch
Yeap that's a shinner.
The very first time my Dad took me fishing he gave me 100 crickets, a 12' cane pole and a six foot fish string. Sat me on the side of a slew and said "I'll be back in a little while". When he returned I had that six foot stringer full of shinners, nothing else. It really hurt my feeling when he started laughing and told me to throw them all away. But I know a shinner when I see one now...Lesson learned..
Yep, that is a big ole shiner. Excellant catfish bait. I wish I had a pond full of those:)
Was there a dorsal fin, if not its not a golden shiner but it does look like one. Could be a striped mullet.

not a striped mullet.....great guess though. looks like a shiner to me
that,s the size we were using in fld. for bass fishing. Great fun when you get a bas to hit a shiner that big . have a crappie day!
oh yeah, thats a shiner. i was reeling in one of them today and a pig ole northern pike came up and hammered it. actually had the pike on my 2 pound ultralight for a couple seconds then he spit out the shiner.
A shiner definetly has a dorsal fin, as we sometimes hook them there! I am sure that is a shiner!Quote:

It is a golden shiner or american shiner some of them florida guys like to call em. Take it down to okachobee and stick him under a balloon on 20 lb test and hold on.
in the cajun country, we call them shad. and i have about 8 gallons of them (not that big) in my freezer as i type this. they are deadly on big blue catfish using them as cut bait. but i have caught them by the thousands in= my cast net. ive even caught some up to 4 pounds.

Thats not the same as a slicker. Slickers are called skipjack herring. I thought the same thing until I fished with these shiners on Okeechobee. And yes it is an awesome thing to catch bass on a 8-10 in. shiner.Quote:
