rattling jig
I have been messing around while tying and experimenting with adding a rattle to my jigs. I tied a brass worm rattle under the chennile. I was wondering if anybody else had tried this before and if there was some secrets to this that I had not tried. I have pics but no photobucket account.

Never tried it, but sound like a good idea. I will give it a try

Haven't tried it but I'd like to see it. You can register with Photobucket in just a few minutes, or upload them to www.imageshack.us but make sure you don't loose the links, since they're not grouped by an account.

It is hard to attach a rattle to small crappie jigs. In the late 60's and earlier 70's I help develop a glass rattler (no longer in business). To attach the rattler to a jig for tubes, use shrink tubbing. Works great. You can also crazy glue to spoons, bottom of diving lures, etc. We had the patent on installing the rattler. Our attorney said that no one could patent it because it was the obvious answer to adding sound to a lure.

Well Blue Fox makes a jig that has a rattle in the head of their jigs.
As far as adding them to a hand tied jig I think it wouldn't be too hard, but I have not really tried it yet. I would think one of the glass rattles tied to the hook and then covered with some material other than chenille would work. Probably would need to get into fly tying materials for the best results.
I will give it some more thought and get back if something looks good.

I tried it and made the jig too bulky and muffled the rattle.

I've tied a few flies recently with rattles based on a new pattern by Buddy Price.
They have mylar bodies with small worm rattles in them. They REALLY catch fish
(until you hang them in a tree). I don't have any pics but intend to tie some soon
and will post pics.

http://www.lindyfishingtackle.com/ta...me.php?cat=323 These jig heads have it all.....a "very noisy" rattle, glow paint, red hook, big hook gap.....and, Southern Pro 1.5" Lit'l Hustler tubes will fit over the rattle body (even though they're a little snug.......not much room to bait-pump Nibbles in them). Umbrella Tubes fit real good.

Here's an idea...
Got to messin around in the man cave this morning and had a brainstorm.
See what you think. Rattle is in the mylar.

I have tried several different variations, and the best looking way that I have found is to cut the lead from the bottom of the jig head. This leaves a flat surface and the tip of the rattle is sticking out even with the end of the jig head. I have been using brass rattles and powder coat them to match the color of the head. I then tie them together and then tie the jig on the head rattle combo. This does not add much weight to the jig, because I have trimmed off some of the lead, and it also gives the jig a very nice profile. I have used these mainly in murky water and they have seemed to work really well. I am not sure if the rattle is helping all that much, but I have caught dozens of crappie with them, and have noticed that I seem to catch more bass now than I used too. I think that the rattle does attract the bass, and I hope that it also attracts more crappie as well.

Rattles do help attract bass however i ve never been convinced by rattling crappie jigs...years back i used some jigs that had stickon bubble eyes with a little lead ball in each eye.........they rattled but i not convinced they increased my catch on perch.
