Need advise new to tying

I am getting started in tying. The jigs I want to make will be painted lead head with marbou tails and the chenelle bodies. Need advise on threads what type, color to match chenelle or clear? Will be using some veregated chenelle so need advise on threads I will need. What treatment do you put over the final thread knots? Super glue? head cement? Also I have watched some of the video link provided. In tying on the chenelle body I have seen you attach the chenelle at the rear, bring thread forward toward eye then wrap chenelle forward toward eye. When you get the chenelle wrapped as far forward as you are going do you just knot off this forward end or do you do any thread wrap backwards over the chenelle? Also what type and size of chenelle do I need? Most bodies will be on 1/32 or 1/16 oz size jigs. I am sure I will have more questions but I am thankful for all the info I can get from this site. Usually you should try to match the color thread to either the body or head, but it doesn't affect the fish catching part of it, just the looks of it. I use 3/0 flat waxed nylon for 1/8th - 1/32nd oz. any smaller and I use 6/0 to hide the thread.
To add the chenille, I tie in the tail, wrap back to the head, lay a piece of chenille down with the end to the head, tie it in back to where you want the body to end, then wrap forward. Then you wrap the chenille forward til it meets the head, give it a few good wraps around and then whip finish. Add a drop of head cement and move on to the next one.
You should get size 2/medium chenille, and Nylon chenille is a lot better and makes a prettier jig than rayon chenille, but is a little more expensive.

Are you saying there are two pieces of chenelle? The first tied toward the tail and wrapped forward and the second end at the head wrapped back to the tail end and then the chenelle wrapped forward to head again. I may not be following what you are saying but as I reread the post it appears you are using two pieces of chenell. Thanks

My Favorite is 210 Denier Flat Waxed Danville and next is 140 Denier Ultra thread. I have some 3/0, 6/0 and even 14/0 for flies, but the first 2 are by far my favorite. I can tie any jig from 1/64 to 1/4 using either and look neat.

You only need one piece of chenille unless you are tying a double color body and it's not variegated chenille. If you tie 1/8 or 1/4 you need to double wrap the chenille to make a good body.

I use a whip finish so probably could get away with out glue, but I put one drop of thinned head cement right where I do the finish.

I use to buy head cement, but now I make my own out of Lacquer and MEK thinner. A Qt. of Lacquer will last a very long time. Make sure it's Clear Lacquer if you go that way. After all head cement is just Lacquer in a small bottle as is nail polish.

I like to use 6/0 uni thread. For head cement I use either clear nail polish or head cement. I also use medium chenille.

Nope, I use 1 piece of chenille. Lay a longer piece than you need with one end at the jighead. Tie it down there, wrapping all the way back as far as you want the body, then wrap the thread back to the jighead, then wrap the long piece of chenille around, making the body. Tie off once you get to the head. I wish I had a video camera and I'd make a video of it.

On the thread color are you trying to use a color that matches the chenelle and if varagated one of the colors? Also I have looked at chenelle and there are many choices. Sparkle, ice, Pearl, regular, tinsle etc. What are the most commonly used for the body of crappie jigs? Thanks for all the info

Just pick a color if it's vareigated, I usually do the darker color. If it's regular I try to match the chenille color, if I don't have a thread that matches the chenille color then I use white or a thread color that matches the head color.
Most often you use regular chenille for crappie jigs, both rayon and nylon chenille in size 2/medium. Nylon makes a better looking jig, but costs a little more. Also not all colors are available in nylon chenille.

Same here pretty much! If the color comes in Nylon that is what I get, if not I get the Rayon.

If not variegated and I want to make what I call dual chenille jig I start them both off together and wrap it down just like with one. Once at the stopping point I then wrap them one then the other until I get to the head with both. It will make it candy stripe style. one wrap each as you move to the head.

It will make a difference as to which one is on top and will look more one color than he other.

Any of my 2 color jigs that are not candy stripe looking are variegated and I order it that was from the Mfg.
