chains for trolling

For you guys who troll with chains, wht size do yall use? I have a set but they are NO where near heavy ebough and I am going to have top get some bigger ones for the summer. Any thoughts or ideas on where I can get some or what size I need?

I use two 4' sections of 1/2" chain. I got it at Tractor supply for about $50.

I use 2 3 ft sections of 3/8 chain. If it's blowing so hard that won't slow me down, my poles are going to bouncing too much anyway... Got mine at the local feed store.

Well I have 2 sections of 3/4 that are 2ft long each and they work good one my alum. boat but aren't heavy enough for my big boat and I need some extra wieght it. I guess I could always add me some longer links

Yes, how do you actually use the chains?

i got a 1/2" that's 10 ft long and am able to tie it without putting the whole chain on bottom when the wind allows. to the fellows asking the chain is an anchor used to steady your boat in higher winds. you put the wind at your back and set your chain so you'll hardly move, then your trolling motor will drag the chain. The only way i can control boat position in stiff winds. During a seminar i think it was ronnie capps said he pulled 2 chains behind his 21 ft fiberglass boat. Also said that if the waves are bouncing too much you gotta hold the poles to keep em steady. That gives each fisherman 2 poles.

I think feather was wanting to know more about how you use the chains....When I have trolled, which is very very rarely, I tie them to a rope that is long enough for the water depth. I put them out the back of the boat, on both sides, to hold it staight in the wind. You can use one chain and wrap the rope around the motor and it will be centered, but 2 chains are the most preferred way.

I use 6' of 5/16 coated chain purchased at Lowes. I have 50' of 1/4" nylon rope tied on em. BY adjusting the amount of rope I have in the water determines the speed. I can stop my 18' Xpress in pretty tough winds with about 20' of rope out after the chain hits bottom.

I use 6ft of 3/8 chain and can adjust it with more or less line.

Don't use them..wrecks the habitat. What really sucks is when go to a lot of work sinking your condos and a chain dragger comes along and knocks'em over. screws them up, etc. FYI, use a long rope and and empty five gallon bucket or spend $20 bucks on a drift sock, both work as good or better. thank you in advance

five gallon bucket doesn't do it for me. A windsock will work in light winds but when on Grenada or Sardis and the wind is 30 plus chains are the only way to go. I had chains out on my 1860 F&F and pulled the plug and let the floor fill up with water to slow me down.
