Has any done a conversion on a fixed speed foot controlled trolling motor to a variable speed unit? There has to be something on the market that could be used as a rheostat switch to give myself better speed control. Any ideas, or advice? Thanks in advance! Rollcaster.................

What do they do? and what do you search to find them? I came up with a bunch of stuff NOT fishing related!!!

I started to buy one of these units. I was told it would only work on a 12vt system. My TM was a 24vt. You can usually find them for arond $100 on ebay.
A co. called Vexilar made one of these too, but I forget what exactly
they called it.

Look for pulse width modulation (PWM). That is how you get variable speed on a DC motor. You want a model that can handle 40-50 amps. Cane Pole posted a circuit diagram about a year ago that you can build.
if you have a 3 speed trolling motor go to advance auto and get the resistor that goes on the fire wall of a ford it use ta be alittle 1/2in square about 2ins. long and now its a little round thing and put it in the circurt and get a 50amp. switch and bridge it so you can flip the switch and go back to what you had...might help I took a 3 speed and made a 6 speed out of it and if you got a 5 speed you can make a 10 speed out of it...
Motor speed control out of Wal Mart electric shopping scooter works fine.:)
I have a circuit you can build if you can build electronic circuits. Parts bout $20.00. 40A-50A max...Simple pwm. Mine works fine. Several people built them. Ain't nobody shot me yet cause it didn't work. I ain't heard any complaints. Not for the unskilled or lame. It is rfi intense (pwm) and not for the pacemaker people. The circuit is hiding somewhere on my computer.
Anyone is welcome to use it. I am not responsible for your wiring, etc.

I would mount the circuit in a good metal box . Use good heat sinks for the IRF fets. Waterproof the box and the circuit board. This circuit gets really warm, so be aware of this when mounting box.
the 100k potentiometer should be a sealed type to keep the grit out. If you mount the pot remotely from the circuit box, I would twist the wires to/from the box to reduce coupled noise.
Wire the heave outline with same size wiring as you boat tm wiring. Lots of current here.
I have used this circuit numerous times, so I know it works.
