If you buy the maps seperate from the unit. can you load the maps onto the unit so that you can then use an SD card in that slot for waypoints or whatever?

No. The unit just reads the information on the card.
Well that stinks.
You have 2 slots on the 997 and only need one for the SD card and one for the maps. Not a problem.
Unless your looking at the 797, Then its a big problem.
Also I checked today and the 3-D maps for the 997 has Pickwick on it. LOL
Pete
The maps should be the same from unit to unit but how many expansion slots you have is the key right? What I am saying is even if I bought a 787c and I purchased the maps I will still get the 3-D maps for Pickwick. Maps are not unit specific are they?
Am I understanding this correctly.

Maps are not unit specefic!
But they are card specefic! You have to buy the right card for the area or lakes of interest!
Right,Right...that's what I thought. Different cards for different units but not maps.
Gotcha!
The Hound
Crappiehound,
Different cards for different map regions. If I had a card for my Humminbird, I could also use it in a Lowrance etc. My 787c came preloaded with the navionics bundle, so I can use the sd card for things like screen snapshots and waypoints. Just remember that the navionics bundle are the 2006 maps. The Tennessee River is not in HD. I believe it is on the 08 maps.
WOW, so I ordered a 797 without the maps a couple days ago, and if I understand correctly, I won't be able to run maps and do scans and save waypoints at the same time? I should have researched this a little better I guess. I figured it was similar to my lowrance GPS where I can have a map loaded on an SD and still save tracks and waypoints to the SD.
I'll just have to work around it, or carry two cards I guess.
I use a hand helt gps that reads sd cards
What you do is run the map card in the unit till you are ready to do a recording or snapshot. Then you swap cards(mapping with a blank) Do the recording and when done swap back! Make sure you push the lock tab too lock on the map card so you don't accidentally record or write anything too it and screw it up!
Way points and tracks will stay in the unit till you do a " export all Nav data" or a "Save track"
If you are just marking waypoints and not takeing snapshots turn off the record feature so it wont write or try to write to you map card!
This is where the 900 series has an advantage! 2 card slots!!
Good luck You will Like it!

I have the 2007 premium maps, the map contours stop at the highway C bridge on the osage arm, nothing above that.
Thanks for the info Tae. Right now I'm just running mapcreate maps on my lowrance. I was going to order the Navionics SD card from Cabela's. Sounds like I can just wait though. What is the size of a normal snapshot from a 797?
I'm planning on trying to save now, and maybe just upgrade to a 900 series cho in 2009. :rolleyes:Quote:

Your 797 will show you every thing a 997 will, It just will be on a smaller scale. You will like it. If you have problems check out the sideimageing group at yahoo. There are tons of helpers there!
I joined that group a week or so ago. Very informative, and I've enjoyed looking at all the pictures. Can't wait till the unit is delivered.Quote:

Lowrance and hummingbird use different file formats. So at a minimum you would have to convert the mapcreate waypoints and tracks to Hummingbird format! Hummingbird has a software called "Hummingbird pc" that can do that!
If I understand you correctly, I can't use the map create maps, but I can transfer all of my route's and waypoints from lowrance GPS.
thanks
that is correct Humminbird pc will convert Lowrance gps files to Hummingbird files. Just remember to back up your data before you convert in case something goes wrong! It works great. But you know Murphy's law!
Thanks. I should have the unit on Monday!
Didn't see any answer on this question, on the larger screen 997 a screen capture runs just over 1.2 mb.

Thanks Warren. So it's safe to assume that if I'm going to record scans, I better have a 2GB card....
san disk extreme lll seems to be the fastest SD card.
it works great in my 997 anyways...
