Helps to have larger shad, slit the belly and use 1 finger and dig'em out.Thread on hook several times.(treble hooks work also)When I tie my circle hooks on,I leave about 6 inches of tag from the eyelet. After baiting up,use this extra line to wrap around the guts...this works good for chicken livers also!!
Cut them up like in the photo and use the whole piece........

i just wanna see 130 yards ........period.
ohh thats easy lol... i can push 150 if i up my weight... 20 years of surfcasting and using surfpoles taught me that
John, do you happen to know the record distance for surfcasting?
i can throw a football farther than 130 yards too
I threw my back out 2"
I'm just saying

i used to fish alot with these tournament long casters when i lived in texas city and trust me i couldnt hold a candle to any of them
pantie hoses will do the trick ;)
hmm good answer.. gues i gotta stop robbing banks and use my pair to hold bait...chit why didnt i think of that first lol...nice gills
I live at the beach, I hear the surf everyday......I fish, everyday....beach,pier,surf or in a 16,24 or 40 footer....
I dont know what the record is, but this is one of the longest I have ever watched-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQOeAzhJpZo
records are up above..... i know dozens of people who can cast 150-200 yards
that cast thee was 816 feet or bout 272 yards
The way i use shad guts. I first question is are you getting your shad fresh our in a jar full of guts. Either way you can do one of two things. Cut up the shad and use the middle portion of the shad. 2nd way is when i'm using shad guts from a jar is to find the piece that is a darker redish brown color. This peice of shad is the toughest piece that i have found so far. This piece stays on the hook if hooked properly. hopes this help you out.
thanks.. i tried using the middle peices but for some reason these cold water cats are harder to catch on it... the guys i seen killing the cats were just using guts throwing the rest of shad away... oh yes btw im using fresh shad, got unlimited supply of them ..will try methods i seen this weekend and let everyone know how i do
Cut squares from panty hose. wrap the guts in a square and run the hook through it. Use trebles if you can. If you use trebels set the hook in the square, lay the guts in it and wrap the hose around the points to make a bag..Works great and you can spray the hose with shad oil too for more funk in the water!! According to my wife "Sheer" hose are thinnest and let the most scent out, the cheaper the better!!
I have used the pantie hose trick alot when I was growing up -
Ever try putting a hook in your bait and then freezing it in little blobs ?
we used to do that with chicken liver way back when and it worked great, never came off the hook and stayed where it landed and only took a few minutes to thaw and as it did I am sure it held the "scent" better and lasted longer......after all chicken livers are GUTS too !!
lol thats best idea heard yet, soon as lake unfreezes now gonna try it, there doing a 3 week shutdown on the power plant so was frozen over so i went crappie fishing today instead
I'll keep that one in mind, thanks!Quote:

You may throw aa football 130yrds but not with your arm.
The surf cast record was over 800ft. Hatteras surf cast competition I think. The reason I know this is because I went to the surf shop where they were making his poles... I asked to buy his blanks... they were nicer than will ever be on the market.
Competitions are different than fishing, as they have no bait for resistance only the weight, usually 2oz egg, and modify reels (Ambass. 6000 w/ line leveler removed has been preferred in the past.
actually, your mostly right the surf cast record was actually in a texas competition and he used a 5 1/4 ounce weight. ambass 6000 with level wind removed is prefered but they also replace regular bearings with ceramic bearings and they also put i magnetized breaks. still not hard at all to cast 130 (390 feet)yards with bait on(depending on bait size with the right equipment(12foot fenwick blank or harrington 542 blank(11footer) ,diawa sealine with ceramic bearings 4-6 ox weight and not a huge bait)
funny you should mention a abu 6000 tricked out with ceramic bearings and the level wind removed- lol ......i have that reel and had it done the same way .......
I had over 200 rod/reel combo's - I bet I have gave away 20 combos to my buddys this year already. As far as SURF fishing goes I am down to my favorite 3 reels, on the left you will see the abu 6000 with no level wind anymore, then theres the diawa grandwave (silver) and the shimano calcutta 400s (gold) - I keep diawa sealine sh30 spooled up for a spare reel in my tackle bag on the cart so when I blow up a reel I dont have to mess with it on the beach

I cut my shad up exactly like RACN35 showed with his picture. It seems to work really well for me.
116.98m is the longest cast, there is a cool video you should look at. It is at www.Longcasters.org
from the site you posted
As the most widely recognized long distance surfcaster in the world, Neil MacKellow holds three personal World championships, fourteen British individual championships, the 2000 US Open national championship title and more. He has students around the World that have benefited from his techniques. Neil’s lifetime personal best cast is over 890 feet.
that comes to 228 meters.. dont see where you got 116.98 which is only 456 feet
cats don`t bight good in cold water flat head bits live bait better .
That distance was just off of that video on the website. I know I am not even on the same playing field as that guy... Even if that was a short cast
yeah they annnounced it wrong, the math above just proves that... ive measured casts of mine at 460 feet which is 150.3 yards and i know on somedays fishing i have gone a lil farther, im not i league with any of them guys either but i know bout how far im getting if im casting 3/4 of my spool off a ambasadeur 6000. that guy there was from england, lot of the guys i used to fish with in texas have and still do long casting competitions and i cant touch them but i can hold my own
ohh papasage this lake is a power plant lake and water stays warm..they just tend to nibble tho and seem to be a little finicky but seen a few guys load up on channels using the shad guts... i use the setions and they would just seem to mouth it, i would get numerous bites but was a pain to hook them.
Well i get the big gizzard shad here in a cast net and you cut them open and they have a gizzard just like a chickens gizzard and it is very tuff . you cant sling it off either. big cats love them.
the only part of the guts i use.
~sticko~
Blue cats love the cold round here!
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...7/DSC00653.jpg
It's no channel but it was caught on the gut pocket section of a gizzard shad in 38 digree water temps.
As for casting the guts as far as you say I have never tryed just throwing the guts. Channel cats like to eat all kinds of stuff including prepared baits, hot dogs, and ivory soap. I am sure you can find something they will feed on besides shad guts that you can cast as far as you want!
if i ever use cut bait which is rare as i really only target flathead cats and some channels
cut bait-use medium to small sized shad. gills. bass. etc. cut off the head just behind the gill plate and use its head and hook it through the top of the head behind the nostrils its harder there than on any other part on its body
i even know people who prefer hooking live bait in a similar way through the lips and just behind the nostrils but a little low as i dont i always hook live bait in any situation towards the tail its not as tough as the head but i never ever have problems slinging it off i guess thats because i never cast more than 50 yards when fishing for flatheads because 90% of the fish i catch are in 4 to 8 feet of water but listen to racn about those panty hose and freezing liver as that does work and for casting competitions i know alot of those guys use peen surfmaster 200 and penn mag reels as they will easily out cast any abu without levelwind and ceramics as i own a few of each of those mentioned
yeah some of them penns are great, one of the longest casters i seen in texs was this black guy named "buster" .. well buster was a good 6 foot 8 and weighed bout 150 pounds soaking wet... used a 14 foot rod and penn squidders and could launch the bejesus out of it... many time he could get where we could not and would outfish us, but ocassionally he would over cast the fish and could never be convinced to cast shorter...him and this other long caster named rich rodriquez used to have contests at the peirs sometimes for cash when fish just werent biting. there was one time rich who would get mad when boats would get close to the peirs.. now by texas law boats cant be within 200 yars of the peir.. well this one boat was maybe 150 yards and rich told him to move and the guy gave him the finger.. rich launches a 6 oz weight that goes threw the the guys windshild and knocks him dead on his buttocks..needless to say he was back out there fishing after we collected bail money for him lol
but blue cats do bite better in cold water than warm water and they tend to like fresh cut bait
I thumped a booger almost 20 yards and if the chicken hadn't of got it, I think it would have slid another 5 yards.....Dam nasty chickens.
