The only thing I would say is you should take the marabou off the quill and then tie it in. Make a little stack tearing it off a little at a time until you get as much as you want then hold it together and tie it in. Also the tail really should not be so squared off and should be a natural taper.
It seems you are tying in the hole feather and then cutting it to the length you want and it will not be necessary if you cut it to length after tearing it off the quill.
They will look better if not squared off.
All of this of course is IMHO!

i agree, this is the way I tie marabou, it gives it that " Not store bought " look. The jigs look great, and will catch fish. Just give it a try one time pulling it off and stacking it on there, and see if you like that look. Looks great man! I love blue/chart!!Quote:

It would look like this if it was.Quote:

Just take your fingers and pinch and pull tare out some of the marabou to thin it out ,and make it kind of raggie looking (shorter longer look) this makes
it look better in the water. more action = more fish

Thanks for all the tips,I have been mixing in some sea fiber with the marabou to make it stnd out a little ,Not sure if this its a good idea or not . When i wrap the feathers i go a good ways down the hook maybe too far ,i am striping it from the quil except for the blue that isnt as good a quality .Also i heard that trimming the ends helps keep the fish from biting short .but it doesnt lookas natural.I appreciat all the help.
Jon
P.S. heres a couple more :the 1 in the middle is sea fibers instead of marabou
To keep fish from biting short, I only use a tail as long as the hook is. After you cut/pull the marabou from the quill, I hold it by the cut end and use the hook as a guide on how long to make the tail. Put it on the hook making sure your tail is long enough and then tie it in.
Agree with smooth you control the length by cutting before tying and the short strikes will take care of them selves.
I really don't personally worry about the length as much as some people and have not really had any issues with short strikes that much. I guess if you made it really long then it may become a issue, but I never have and some of mine are pretty long. The only time I have really noticed short strikes was fishing for bass using top water baits and buzz baits. Then I have seen trouble and needed a trailer hook.
Here is one that is kind of long and I have no reservations about using it just as is...

Thanks BamaMan that is one of my new sparkle jigs. Actually they look better in person because it's hard so capture the body sparkles so they look like they do here in my hand.Quote:

Yes, i do some with the chenille but not many with just thread i need to experiment i guess .The 1 on the upper left is 1/16 oz with blue chenille.
Jon
Yes I see that one, but I was mainly talking about the others and should have said that. Sorry about that!Quote:

Anyway it's just a matter of what you like than then the final word comes from the crappie. After all that is the goal huh?

Jon those are some good looking jigs. I tie real short tailed jigs and like them. They have a good action in the water. A long tail is good when fish are real aggressive and taking all of the jig then the shorter tail is good for real light bite crappies that aren't aggressive. Try a long tail like you have and a short tail. I do waste some marabou to get the the length and from the way I use it. Here is a pic of how my tails are.

Skip are you taking the feathers from the bottom part of the quill, or does it not matter where on the quill you pull them from. Also when you tie them on are you looking for a thinner and more sporadic than just cutting the end off the marabo? Hopefully this makes some since.Quote:
