They should ban them across the state I think.
can't find anything on MDWFP web site.
I'm sure if anyone would know if this was true or not, it would be Pam Hammond @ Roy's on the upper end of the lake. A few years ago they institued tighter restrictions about the use of yoyos on this lake and it had gotten better compared to the previous years. It was really bad at one time, fish hanging out of the water all over the lake. I had no idea though a total ban was in the works.
If that were true it would be a blessing for that lake the yo yo's are crazy there.
I also think yoyo's should be banned everywhere. Though I have found a good use for them. I love to see people catch fish but, when their boat is bumping mine or I when I can't navigate my boat because someone is ontop of me. I break out my yoyo's and start putting them out....when they leave I'll take the bait off them and continue to fish that area....;) I find this way better over verbal confrontation

Hey Sac, I agree with you 100%. We fish Reel Foot a lot and when we first started going there those stupid things were hangin every where. I remember one time me and a couple of buddies of mine rescued a protected bird that was tangled up in one. If we would have not got the bird out of it, it would have died. Now you don't see them, I'm not sure if they made them illegal there or not but they should be.
CX.
That must make me a yo yo then. I don't see that there is anything wrong with using them with consideration and common sense. I think that you should have to stay with them while they are out so that you do not waste fish. To me using a yo yo is no worse than someone who makes a living off of the fish from a public lake.
The problem is most dont stay with them. You always see short (illegal) fish hanging dead from them. I think they should be illegal. Besides, what fun is it? I want to feel that thump.
I like the feeling too. I only use them ocassionally like if the wind is so high that I can't fish a jig properly. I also enjoy putting a few out on a warm late afternoon while I listen to a baseball game. In my opinion, the root of the problem that many of you have with yo yo's is the same root problem that causes people disdain most anything. It is the inconsiderate people that use them that cause the problem. Should we ban cars because about half the people who drive them are inconsiderate jerks? Where does it stop? I am not trying to pick on Sacalait in particular but I have ran into many fishing guides who think that they own the lakes around here to the point of cursing you if you happen to be on "their spot" when they arrive. Should we ban professional guides also because there are some guides that are jerks? They would say no because it is perfectly legal to be a guide on a lake as long as you follow the rules. Why should a person who chooses to use yo yo's in a legal manner be viewed any differently? Why the double standard? Sacalait certainly has a right to his opinion but I think that it is unfortunate that he paints with such a broad brush as to say that "anyone that uses a yo yo is a yo yo".
I believe it is the unattended yo yo's that will get you a citation, not just the fact that you're fishing with them.
Using a YoYo on a gamefish should be ILLEGAL in this state. Bottom line is people who use them don't catch fish so they have to put out 30 yoyo's to have even a remote chance at catching a limit.
Can we just move on, fellers?:):)
Yeah, what you said John.
As long as yo yo's are a leagl too I don't have a problem with them as long as they are used responsibily and ethically. The same problem exists with all the trot lines left out, you just never get to see the wasted fish.
There was no band Saturday because people were putting them out all around me.
I apologize fellas. My intention was only to voice my opinion on this............not to stir things up. I am simply trying to say thay the problem is not the yo yo itself. It is the people that do not use them legally or humanely. Kind of like a gun. To say that the only reason a person uses a yo yo is because they are not a good enough fisherman is simply presumptious. Should trot lines be banned? Should spider rigging be banned? They both allow a person to increase their odds in catching fish as well. The REAL bottom line is that they are in fact legal and can and will be used. I will leave this alone and understand that people just disagree on this subject and I am starting to ruffle feathers.
Everyone is titled to an opinion GS... If they were the ones using the yo yo's, it would be perfectly fine.
ILLINOIS BOY WANT TO KNOW
