One of my customers has a brother that lives on Clear lake. He went to visit him a couple of weeks ago and came back telling me about all the 4lb crappie in this lake. I dont want to holler BS , but he is known for streeeeeetching the truth to the max . Are 4 pounders as common here as he would have you believe ?
4 pounders aren`t common anywhere!
I know they grow some big ole bass out there, I was wondering if they had figured out how to grow big ole slabs without the big ole bass gettin' them first .
i can tell you for a fact its crap...the average crappie in clear lake are 3/4 to 1 1/2 pounds.. the state record for crappie in california are 4.1 and 4.8 for blackand white crappie respectively.. so if there was all these 4 lbers them records would be higher

id be making regular trips to this clear lake if it were true..at the expense of my job,wife,etc lol.. 4 lb crappie yea right............
Might not be a lot of 4lbers but i'm willing to go find out how many 3lbers are there.:D My personal best is 3.2lb and i'd like to try to top it.

I have no idea, but clear lake grows some really big fish. Im always skeptical when someone tells about how big there fish are, espically me:D . We were out once fishing and came up on a float tuber. I asked him how the fishing was, he replied nothing and asked the same. I told him we only had one bite but didnt get him. We actually had 7 bass for 40# in the live well, but there was no way i was goint to tell. It was a good day. My best crappie was 2.25 or 2.3 and I cant imagine a 4#. I always though it would be neat to try and cross a nile perch with a black crappie:eek: .

We have met people from all over (had a blast with most of them too!) who are just amazed at the size of the crappie here. From what I gather lakes in the mid west or back east just don't have large crappie...to us they are all fun...although hookin' into a fattie is just the icing on it all.....k....'nuff blabbin', more eye candy...lol. Each and every one caught on a Fin-S Shad minnow jig in ice or albino/ice....although chartreuse and live minnows will getcha a limit as well. For the most part we are all about the C&R, but don't let it fool you...there has been a few breaded fillets in the pan before. Lol... you should see the look on peoples faces when you nail a 3#er, give it a peck, snap a pic and toss it back. No matter what we are official Crappaholics. Hope there's not a cure! Speak for your part of Fla! We have plenty of 2.5 crappie at Talquin and Seminole ain`t to bad! Also Lake Monroe has 2.5 plus crappie.Quote:

Im not a moderator, when I requested the Ca board, they tried to hornswagle me into it:D . Sometimes I dont visit for months. Ive fished by clear lake and the fishing was VERY good. Im planning on either going back up or to the delta in spring. My boat is stored about an hour from clear lake though. Im going up to visit her tomarrow with a brand new footpedal.

Lol...me thinks you've been hornswaggled then, because you're listed as the moderator for this forum:p I've never fished the Delta, but hear it's great for bassin'. Sounds like if you are going to be that close to the lake you have time for a cast or two...lol. Fishing's still decent from what I gather...we're going to try and head back up there mid January. Can't wait too long or the withdrawals kick in and it's not a pretty sight.:D

I recently saw a TV show called fun fishing where two guys were catching real nice Crappie out of Clear Lake.That Crappie from the Loomis site is a Monster!

I was up in Sac when the show was on but we lost power from the storm so I did not get to see it. Ya that crappie makes my 2.3 look like a baby. I heard the same thing about isabella, all the fish were huge, we caught alot of squeakers to small to mess with.

Although the original "4 pound crappie are common" comment was stretching the truth beyond its limitations, it still doesn't change the fact about that gal that caught that 4+ pounder up in Rodman slough some six years ago... That was the one that was tied up to a dock for three days before someone realized that it was a black crappie and not a white and would've been a new state record if it was properly weighed and recorded right away... I heard that it ended up in a fish tank at the state park visitor center before it finally died. It was gone by the time that I made it up there in April.
If I'm not mistaken, I thought that Catfish Ed said that he laid eyes on it himself before it croaked. Ask him.
Ain't nothin' like a fertile lake with southern-strain fish and lots o' feed to produce some real wall-hangers (and some dis-believers). :-)
noone is doubting there is a 4 lber in there or maybe more than 1, but there is probably 4 lbers in alot of lakes, what people were making horse puckey comments about is that it was common. no where is it common to catch 4 lbers and i repeat no where...
but people tend to fall into disbeleif also bout people and clear lake records anyway especially since that 25 lb bass them dudes didnt weigh in for a record.. and no i dont trust a digital rapalla scale.
and i know your arguement will be that they didnt want to kill the fish, but the way you californians talk bout clear lake there is plenty of 20 lb bass so sorry for a fish that would been worth a milliion dollars or more in endorsements, no way in hell a sane person would have let it got unless that weight wasnt legit, and yes there would have been ton of money for them guys even if it wasnt verified correctly by being hooked outside the mouth.
dont get me wrong there is great fish there, awesome fish, but it isnt the garden of eden
I was in San Diego a couple of weeks ago ---I sure would have liked to see the lake and try for some of them slabs !!!!

It's true. Clear lake does have some very big Crappie in it. I personally have caught a couple over three pounds, and many going from one to two pounds. I also saw a guy in a boat, a few yards from me, pulled one in that was definitely 4 pounds Here's a couple that I caught while I was there in November. The big ones are getting harder to come by now because, Crappie eaters are starting to clean them out. It's time to start doing some serious catch and release.
