The last few crappie I've caught and cleaned still had eggs in them. I think I remember some discussion about the significance of this some time past but can't find it. Does anyone know if this means anything? Maybe it doesn't, I just don't recall seeing eggs in fish this time of year.

I actually believe the eggs you are seeing now are being put on for the spring. Any of the crappie that kept their eggs last spring (didn't spawn due to crazy weather, etc.) would have been absorbed by their body by this time. I may be wrong though, but 90 % sure.
Those should be devloping eggs for this spring.
Yep, they are putting on eggs real fast right now for the coming spawn. I've read that a 2-pound crappie can have up to 500,000 eggs in her belly so it takes a while to get a supply built up. We usually start seeing the first sign of new eggs forming in October when the surface temps get under 70-degrees.

YES, Lots of folks are behind on their biology.:D All the warm water fish species should be starting to produce eggs. Even the late spawners such as Catfish are already forming next summers spawn.Quote:

If I remember right my Mom use to meal and fry them just like the fish. I have not eaten any in 30 years.
