Not for me. I use unpainted heads and the spoons i use dont have eyes on them either.
I Use Almost All Tubes And Insider Lead. There Is No Lead Showing With This, Only The Jig Body.

I find that it really doesnt matter.
I never really use them. My heads are just one solid color.
I don't put eyes on unless the customer wants them. Do they work with out eyes? Sure they do, but the one thing that makes me think that at times it may make a difference. While reading some tips on a board some where the topic of eyes came up and the question that always comes to my mind when discussed is this "have you ever seen a bait fish with out eyes?"
Nature puts fake eyes on animals to help protect them when they are small and still growing. Like the red fish with spots on it's tail or even butterflies and may other animals in nature have some kind of fake eye to get any attack to hit the tail instead of their head.
So maybe it helps at times and maybe not, but since nature puts fake eyes on some animals I would think it can help at times. I will put them on my personal ones some times, but not 100% of the time, not even near 100%.
Done well they look great though!

I think eyes are just like colors. Some times a certain color works and sometimes they don't. Thats one of the many things that makes crappie fishing so challenging. (and fustrating) LOL
Let the fish decide which they prefer.
I haven't found it matters. I haven't seen a fish without eyes, but I haven't seen a chartreuse fish either. :p
I use eyes on my personal ones because I am trying to imitate a minnow or something a fish would eat. If a customer wants them, I'll do that because it is their preference.

I just wish they would see good enought to help me get the line into the other eye:D
to me not worth the trouble to try and put eyes on em. if fish is hungry they gonna eat it regardless and i have found no difference in my catches with or without eyes
I put eyes on most of mine. I couldn't hurt and I think it does help and I need all the help I can get.
Personally,I like eyes on small baits because they just look better. Keeping some records of catches with or without eyes..in my records the eyes lost.
Stripers it another story.Eyes on striper baits...I do know a bucktail with eyes works better than without eyes. The larger the eye the better. A red eye seems to be better than a green or silver for some reason. Looking back into the older baits, the makers used a lot of white and red colors. I think the red resembles gills or blood which intices a fish to strike. Most fish take the bait head first...so maybe the eye is a target lock.
Overall its smell and sound. Sight probably comes in last in the fishes attack plan.
Until someone figures it out I guess we will still continue to go "fishing" as usual.
Good observation!! I like that.Quote:

Crappie eat a jig out of reaction or instinct NOT inspection or comparison. I use to spend the time on eyes. Now I don't and catch just as many as I did with.

i use bead chain, and barbells, chain most of the time,as i do not pour jig heads, and use lead wire these eyes add weight to the front of the jig . this makes the jig "tippie" and gives a different action ,depending on placement.
some times i paint them sometimes not,but you sure can catch fish with no eyes at all.
Probably matters more in clear water when they're in a less aggressive mood.
I like eyes on mine but if i run out of them i dont quit fishin
Sounds as if you do a lot of "Clousers"Quote:

with eyes , for sure
yes shipahoy 41,i tie the clouser pattern or should i say variations of the clouser for most of my fishing.
i find bead chain and (dumbell eyes in lead and tungston)used with or without lead wire , gives me many weight variations.the dumb bell eyes are easy to paint,or you can use stick on eyes .
varying eye placement on the hook shank also gives the bait different action. the clouser rides with the hook up like a lead head jig,but with weighted eyes i do not have to pour heads, something i hated to do before i found this pattern.
as i am an avid fly fisher,i use the clouser for brem ,chinks,
and bass,in sizes form #10 through #2for panfish and larger sizes for bass.
this is a great site ,thanks for the opportunity to join .
Unpainted heads work as good as painted heads IMO. Besides, what difference would it make inside a tube or small swimbait? Does anyone paint eyes on tubes?
One thing I do though is powder paint some heads with glow powder paint for night fishing and early or late hour fishing. Add a florescent or glow soft plastic and I get far more bites. The other thing I think gets their attention and raises the aggression level a notch is to file the sides of the unpainted lead head so that it sparkles and flashes silver. Once fish get curious from seeing the distant flash of the polished lead, they target the body. I learned this from casting to schooled white perch, using no soft plastic or hair at all and catching one after the other.
