It never ends. Technology is changing so fast that it's hard to keep up with it all. I just thought when I bought the 997 si that it was expensive. Wow!! I said I'd never spend that much for a graph. Well never say never!!
wow,can buy a boat for the price of that gadget lol
Tell me about it :) I been savin my pennies for a 987, before I got enuffQuote:

JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING IS TRUE. THEY JUST LEAD US ON AND TAKE OUR MONEY.
I KNOW THESE GUYS KNEW THIS WAS COMING, BUT PROB A HEAD WOULD ROLL IF IT CAME OUT BEFORE WE WERE SUCKED INTO SIDE IMAGING. Man, I am easy.
Yeah, I'm thinking about waiting for the one where the transducer has
a rotating beam and scans 360 - Cabelas sold some with scanning sonar
a few years back, forget the name. Must have not been quite ready for
prime time because they went away, at least far as I know.
I think the bluewater, commercial guys have had it for awhile now. But I want the one where it displays images in a 3D hologram instead of on a flat screen - next year maybe? :D
Yeah I've known about it for a little while but like Cane Pole said, I couldn't say anything without losing my head. That wouldn't have been as bad as what my wife would have chopped off when I got back home though!
Yes we are out to make some money but what company isn't? Without profit, there would be no money for R&D. Without R&D there would be no new sonar or GPS technology. I'm guessing that the larger display was sought after mainly by the saltwater guys as they have the room and money for it.
J White, we are working on that 3D Holographic Whole Lake Scanning Sonar system for you... where can we send the $10,000,000 bill for it! LOL!
On a side note:
My wife's Nephew (who fishes Crappie Tourny's) will be pissed at me again: Last year he bought a 987c Si unit at the end of Summer - right before the 997 was announced. This year we installed a 997c Si and a 797c Si unit on his boat about one month ago...
It's a little sad if they are charging 1000.00 more for just screen size. That would be hard to justify, unless you are made of money. I would say that adds a whole lot of profit for them. Of course I understand they have cost in new injection molds etc, but wow.
I've been wrong before, so I could be wrong now.
Canepole, I like the addition to your sig. :D
Face it people. When you buy a piece of any electronic gear it is obsolete by time you get it home. If you wait for the latest and greatest, you will never have anything. I wonder if they got the recording function fixed like Lowrance.
Well, call me a sucker, but the only reason I'm not already trying to order
one is my old lady would kill me if I bought one right now - but watch out
next year :p
Humminbird Greg, I told ya I'd report on how my service issue on the Piranha
was resolved - well, they took care of me fine, got a new replacement unit
in yesterday and they even picked up the tab for shipping the old one back.
So true to my word, I ordered a 787 today - sick feeling dropping the dough,
but I guess it's good practice for the hit I'll take on a SI unit later
About the $10,000,000 deal, try the govt. :D they seem to always have
plenty to throw around on r&d stuff.
Before you know it folks will be riding around with 50" screens on there sonars!!!!! :D
J White,
You will be very pleased with the 787. I have one on the front of my boat and it is great. When you get it hooked up and you take it to the lake, change the backround color to black. You will be amazed at how the sonar looks like that.
Thanks Richard, I'll give that a try for sure. Can't wait. I'll be hanging
by the door next week watching for the UPS guy :p
I agree. Too much.Quote:

I like the sig. Some young whipper-snapper penned it!:)
Sitex makes the 360deg scan it's 7,900 read about it today
Greg I got to see one of the 997's on display yesterday. But I guess I am an oddball. But I will stick with my 987 until it does. LOLQuote:

Also Let me say again. I thank you and the other guy so much. For talking time to answer question for all of us.
I have been using Humminbird units from 1986 unit now. And have always been happy with each and every unit I have had.
Thanks again for the customer service and everything. I have always been 100% Happy with the way I have been treated with this company.
Pete
My 997 is only 6 months old, but I love to see the new stuff coming out. We all knew that a bigger screen was coming. Lowrance has so many big screens and people like them.
Like Bill said, electronics change so quickly. The 997 will hold me for a while. Keep the new stuff coming. I love seeing it.

Having just invested in a 997 and now a 787, I am going to pass on electronics for a while. I just plain have no more room...(Plus, my head would be on the dinning room table the same day my wife heard I bought another sonar...)
I run two sonars at the console (997 and Eagle 320) and the 787 up front linked via the Interlink system. I only have a little 16' boat, too much electronics... My fish are coming up pre-cooked as it is & glowing! :)
I was just looking at the pic of the 1197 Ranger 690 posted -
noticed what looks like a speaker grille in the upper righthand area.
It going to talk to us? Or maybe that's where you place your order -
gimme a couple two pounders and yeah I'll take fries with that :D
On the subject of talking to us, that $2,800 would be a little easier to
swallow if it (depthfinder) had a real sexy female voice and was interactive -
good morning Jeff (purr) pleeeeease take me fishing.:p
Whooeee, my old lady is already jealous of my boat, that would be the
icing on the cake!
I have a Humminbird Matrix 87C Combo and a Lowrance LMS334C iGPS. The Lowrance's screen is a little larger and easier to read, but the 87C outperforms it on identifying fish. I can use fish ID on the Humminbird and 95% of the time the fish are right where it shows them. With the Lowrance I can't depend on the unit with fish ID on, and it's very difficult to interpret the screen with fish ID off.
Luckily I have not had any problems with the Lowrance unit but will probably not bother to have it repaired when I do.
I had an issue with my 87C resetting when it got hot. Humminbird sent a replacement unit overnight and I sent the other unit back to them in the same box. My only out of pocket cost was less than $20 shipping (insured) by UPS. In my opinion Humminbird has the best service of all the Sonar manufacturers.
My only gripe is that they discontinued their trade in/upgrade policy and no longer will accept a trade in if you upgrade. I live within driving distance of Eufala, AL and that made it easy to get a new unit. The trade in allowance was about equal to the discount some of the internet resellers offer and it was my understanding the trade in units were donated to charity. It's a shame they discontinued it because it was a great program.
Looking at the 2 units side by side, it doesn't look like that big of a difference. I guess it could be the scale of the pics.
While I admire the technology and think it'd be a great tool to have, if they keep going at this pace, they'll price themselves out of the market. Heck, these units are probably out of the question for most of us. I'd have a hard time thinking of any other technology item in the last several years that had a price bump like this.
Would be nice if someone (canepole) could use this technology and create the same unit to be used with a laptop or tablet. I'd think someone could cut the cost, and still make a bundle. Plus the processing power would be so much greater.
I'd feel pretty silly having bought two of these units on my boat and going home with no fish.....
Aww heck, to me it is all about having fun - I enjoy playing with the
stuff. If we were going for practical, we'd all be fishing from the bank
with a cane pole probably:D Or at least a plywood rowboat.
Not that I wouldn't enjoy that, but enjoy playing with the toys too.
Those pics are not to scale. If you past them into a program and adjust one until the keypads are the same size, it becomes apparent what a monster the 1197 is !

Humminbird has the supply and demand thing down pat. And I don't say that as something negative -- I'm own a business myself -- and it's all about what the market will bear. The big spenders give us the technology that we can afford down the line. Nice work, Greg, even though I don't have a fishin' boat and won't be one of your big spenders...
