That looks pretty darn good to me...
Sweet!
thanks, I am calling it "Orange Atrocity". I think if I dangle in front of a big fat mean Crappie long enough..That Fish will get very mad, and Bite it LOL.
That should work. Orange is a good color.
Fantastic start!
Only advice is don't cut the tail feathers even like that. Other than that you did fine and that jig will catch fish. Your own your way.
Bad ass jig!
The Whipping tool got the best of me... so ended up with too much thread at the base of the neck.
I tried the experiment of twisting two chenilles together, the rolling on the shank. Did someone say "Deep End" ? :)
I agree with Grainraiser, IF the feather is to long and needs to be trimmed, Hold it where you want it trimmed and cut the stem end. That gives you the tip loose which will look more natural to the fishAttachment 498834 like this. You will tie in the end you cut...
Only advice per say from me is don't throw the first or 1000th try out. Keep em all. My biggest, ugliest, bulkiest work of pure terror caught the biggest steelhead I've gotten to date. My buggiest, looked like it got scraped off a windshield bug jig caught more than my nicest ties ever have.
The jig looks good. There’s an art to whip finishing I see many struggle with. The trick is to carefully wrap the thread around the head but let the thread on each wrap slide off the head in between the head and chenille. Don’t wrap the thread over the chenille. I’ll try to do a video on it later today of what I’m trying to explain.
It certainly looks better than my second jig. The more you make the easier it becomes. When I first started tying I finished my ties with several half hitches before trying with whip finisher. I liked the half hitches better so stuck with that.
Another way to do the tail is with v's cut from the feather. This is illustrated up in the stickies (section above topics) as well on YouTube by SK's Fishing Adventures. Both done excellently...
Looks pretty good to me for first attempt.
I like it, keep on tying.
Using a whip finishing tool was the hardest part of learning how to tie jigs. I can now do it with my eyes close but I struggled with it in the beginning. Like you stated let the thread slide down the head and wedge itself between the head and the chenille. Once you make your wraps give the thread a snug pull and you will feel the thread seat itself before making that final whip finish knot.
Great start...think it will catch crappies.
It would help if I were to correctly spell "Learning". haha
I figured out the Whipping tool! Only took a zillion utub vids... and a bit of Brandy!

Good looking jig, like the red effects in the tail. Is that blood or a marker? I've donated blood to my jigs in the past.
You’re on the right track speedy. From here you refine and fine your style and likes/dislikes.
Thank you.
I made another horrible Jig this evening! LOL. experimenting. Fish wont care. I hope!
It looks great to me!
