Military recipe for SOS

Looking for help!!! Are there any elder statesmen who served as Chow Hall Cook?
I'm long in the tooth now, but have to admit, as a young Enlisted teenager my Meal Card was a lifeline.
3 squares a day, room in the barracks, learning a skill, and a paycheck (wasn't much). My military service is treasured...and I miss the breakfast entre of SOS (sh#@ on a shingle). Can anyone help me with a recipe. Have a month-long fishing camp with buddies, and thought I might rekindle some memories!

26 years Air Force. Retired in '95

The military recipe serves 100 people, all of them are that way for convenience...but when I make it now at home ( got out in 1992) here's what I use...2lbs ground beef, 1/2 cup all purpose flour, 3 beef bouillon cubes, 1-1/2 teaspoons Salt, 2-pinches (to taste) Black Pepper, 4-1/2 cups milk, a couple dashes Worcestershire sauce. Brown meat over med. high heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. cook together about 5 min.. Gradually add milk and Worcestershire stirring the whole time..bring to a simmer, stirring constantly so it don't scorch the milk, until thickened. About 5-10 minutes. serve hot over toast or biscuits. A quarter teaspoon of garlic powder can be added with the salt pepper and flour. This makes about 8 servings.

This should bring back lots of memories. Enjoy.

Here is what the current recipe from TM 10-412 Recipe L 030 00 Creamed Ground Beef. Mind you this is for 100 6 oz servings...
For any of the recipes you can Google US Army Quarter Master Corps TM 10-412 Recipe Cards then go to the actual military thread, (there are several that's not), and down load all of them on a PDF file. But Remember, they are for 100 people. However with a bit of ciferin' they can be broken down. Hope this helped you all.Attachment 497551

SOS is the best!

My grandfather many years ago had two sayings... "It will stick to your sides" and "It sure beats a snowball". We thought of SOS as a treat when we got it. Us boys just didn't know we were poor. Now a I've gotten older I can see how rich we were.

Jamesdean, Thank you for recipe and Your Service. Questions...do you drain the ground beef prior to adding the flour? Can this be refrigerated (leftovers)

When I think of SOS I think of chipped or dried beef.

Mullinsb2000, you can, yes, but add and melt 1/2 stick of butter in the cooked ground beef. What this does is allow the flour to stick to the meat better, allowing a bit more flour, then a little more milk, which equates to more gravy for the milk. Just a trick to stretch the gravy so to speak. And your more than welcome for the recipe.
Over the coarse of 16 years of being a cook, I personally have made ground beef so much, that recipe is instilled in my brain, no recipe card needed. And Thank You for your service...

SOS & Buttermilk Biscuits.

I'm gonna fix some with one change. 1 lb ground beef, 1LB JIMMY DEANS original.

In todays way of life, seems a lot of folks are looking for a faster way to do things, or maybe just easier. A short cut to SOS for a small group of folks, is buy some Pioneer brand peppered gravy mix. Each pack makes 2 cups of gravy. Brown your meat, drain, set aside. Make how ever many packets of gravy, add the meat and a couple splashes of Worcestershire. Dip over toast or your flavor of biscuits and your tongue wont know the difference...Just sayin'. Oh yea...Use Milk instead of water when making the gravy. So much better.

Had Jimmy Dean's sausage and pioneer brand gravy mix as above for breakfast this morning hard to beat Pilsbury' grand frozen bisquit with this,

That's the way I been doing it for a while now. With just me and momma here, It's more economical to me, and a lot more easier. I use mil instead of water making the gravy, and put a dash of Worcestershire sauce in to. sure is good stuff.
