Hey guys, I live in Ohio. I was going to start pulling crank bait the bandit 300 with the offshore 38 planer boards. I was wondering what Rod does everybody recommend using. I just don’t want to buy the rods two times. I bought the Shakespeare 15 line counter and now I need to get me a couple of rods. I seen some people is using the Sam Heaton saltwater series rod 7 1/2 foot. Thanks for any help. You can give me I would like to only buy once.

I’ve always used 7 foot ugly sticks, model number CAL 1100.
Always worked how I wanted them to, and they have held up great. Using some I’ve had over 20 years.
The smaller boards I have not used,
might be ok but I’d make sure before buying a bunch. I’ve always used the or-12 size with the add-on tattle flags. The flag kits come with better release clips too. I unclip and lay aside the board as it comes to the boat, never had any luck with rigging them to trip and release when a fish hit.

I use an assortment of bass rods to pull boards with
Talk to M. R. Dux, a guide on Ky.lake. He specializes in pulling crank baits.
I use Daiwa Wilderness Model WDDR802MHR. It’s a medium heavy designed for 10-20 lb line which I use when trolling. Didn’t break the bank either which is a plus.

One of the cheapest rods of its type. Check with Midway USA on prices. Walmart.com has them at times.
For cranks I normally run OffShore Tackle OR12 boards with Diawa line counter reels. Tattle flags are optional since crappie rarely will pull the flag down. I do want the flags up on my OR12s for visibility.
I run the #16 and #19 releases for cranks. I twist my flouro line and put it in the front release then leave a slack line between the releases. . Makes it tons easier to trip the release on a strike. Lots of Off Shore videos on YouTube.
For jigs and spinner heads, I run Off Shore Tackle OR38 boards on my spinning tackle I use for longlining.

Because I’ve been in Dux boat so many times, I would add one small detail he showed me while pulling boards ...
Using rods of all the same length (pulling boards) allows juggling rods into different rod holders with less confusion ...
Remembering the board is the controlling factor of the bait - not the rod ...

Jim, you probably are aware, but I thought I might mention to be careful as to how many planers you use at a time. Ohio law is 3 lines max per person. I once managed a fleet there, and folks were amazed at seeing my longline and striper trolling set ups with multiple rods.

Guess I’m gonna be the odd guy out here, but the spring loaded tattle flags…. I could get by without them, but sure would hate to. Adjusted right so they just stay up from the baits pull - even a 6 inch fish will make mine wiggle, half down then back up a time or two. If I’m paying attention, keeps me from dragging short fish. Had a lot of that today, threw back over two dozen dinks to end up with a decent mess. Kept 18 and a bonus Sauger, and 4 blue cats
The catfish were really turning on about the time I quit. I can only deal w so many slimers [emoji6]
