Hey all, I got a question about the anti reverse switch, do you guys have any other purpose for it besides backreeling? Also are the reels that have it less durable than the ones that don’t?

Never used it ever in my life

There is no other purpose for it other than back reeling. As to being less durable. On less expensive reels it can be a problem. And even on more expensive reels it is just one more part that can fail. Unless you fish a ton...meaning 5 days a week 365 a year...they will probably hold up. I found out years ago when fishing one reel only, 5 days week, you will find out pretty quick which reels will hold up and which ones won't.

I happen to like the anti reverse, but it is not a deal breaker.

reverse is for backing up as I remember , never liked backing up much is me .....
never did get why they even have one and HATE them personally , first time it gets in reverse and you give it a solid hook set ....
your knuckles will NEVER forget it and you will also totally miss the fish and foul your gear to heck and back ....
so in this episode of how to ketch a fish ,,,,,,
I AM totally ANTI reverse prone ....just saying :Rofl
:hesaid and I have never used it. I have enough trouble going forward :biggrin
I see, I recently bought a daiwa spinning reel and it has one anti reverse switch, but I fish saltwater most of the time, but this forum is super helpful for the type of fish I am trying to catch, they are very similar to a bluegill but saltwater. I was concerned that the saltwater would enter through the opening... guess ill just have to see how long the reel will survive.
As I see it, an anti-reverse switch is to take the function away from a weak drag system. And yes, I have used it a time or two ... but, only on low end UL spinning reels while fishing for Crappie and hooking into a large Bass, Drum, Catfish, or another specie of fish that I want to bring onboard (whether or not I intend to keep it).
So I just got my Daiwa Exceller 1000 2024 in the mail today.. I must say the reel feels nice smooth and light, I own some high end Shimano and Daiwa reels and this is almost on par with the smoothness…
I used the anti reverse to back reel when fishing for carp in my teens but haven't used it since. Never use it anymore since my new reels have such good drag systems. The last three reels I've bought don't have an anti reverse on it which is a good thing for me. I've had two reels where the anti reverse stopped working, once when I set the hook on a big crappie and I lost that fish. One is a Daiwa Certate which is a high end reel and the other a Quantum Energy. Had both reels repaired and used them for a little while and the anti reverse went out again. Now they sit on a shelf collecting dust.
