Just buy some protec paint and dip them yourself. It is really a simple process.
I am with him. A heat gun or heat source of your choosing and a bottle of powder. Really easy to do
ok i will try that thanks alot!
1/8 oz are easier in my opinion to coat. 7 seconds in front of heat gun each side dip in paint. if it don't get shiny, put it back in front of heat gun for a few seconds till it is. I keep heat gun on low temp if it has a high and low setting. Less chance of lead leaving hook and making a splattered mess.
The to most important things to remember is to heat the jighead for around 10 seconds and don't just dump it in the powder. You swirl it around in the powder for 1/2 second and then pull it out. This will allow you to have a thin coat instead of a hunk of paint on the jig head. It's crucial you keep that jig head moving when dipping it in the paint.
I use a alcohol burner that I got at an archery shop, nice and quiet, but as Eric says not too long or a splattered mess.
A Bic lighter works great as well. Quieter too.
I started out using a simple candle. I tried a few other methods and found a heat gun was the best method for me.
I also use the alcohol burner. Easy to use and does a good job for heating jig heads for dipping. Buy a small pack of cheap jig heads and practice. I also use a metal rack to place jig heads on to dry. Some bake them on with an oven.
I bought a dewalt heat gun for about $20 fifteen years ago and it comes in handy for other stuff too. I use a small pair of needle nose pliers and hold the eye when I dip. I hold the hook and count 3 or 4 on each side til I feel the heat in the hook, grab the eye with the pliers and dip and tap on the side of the jar. I Don’t have to clean the eyes afterwards that way. If you heat while holding it with the pliers you’ll coat the pliers too cuz they’d get hot. Candle and alcohol burner didn’t git it for me.
I have gotten so good dipping jig heads that I no longer need to use pliers. I can dip then by hand and they will come out with no paint in the eyes. The key is to dip the head quickly while making a circular turn. As long as the paint has been fluffed you will get a perfect jig painted jig head. I only use pliers when dipping 1/64 heads.
Thanks for the help i will get some ordered!
I use a cheap heat gun from harbor freight for painting and cheap toaster oven I bought off one of the local online forums.
I built 8 fluid beds and they work perfect using tricepts.
Well, I still have alot to learn as the eyes didnt turn out like I woulda liked. I started by holding the jighead with hemostats before heating and after paInting the head the hemostat "tore" loose from the jighead. Other than that I think they turned out pretty good. My heat gun hasnt arrived yet so I used a lighter. I also havent bought a toaster oven yet. Not too sure I need one since I am painting heads just for me and all I do is longline troll. Here's a couple pics. Dont mind hurting my feelings either...I'm pretty thick skinned. Tell me anything you think will make me better at this.:)

They look good to me other than the eyes needing a little care. I do like the stand with threaded rod. I need to make one of those.
Is there any such thing as dipping the eyes without them being stopped up with paint afterwards?!?
Use heat shrink tube over the eyes.
It's not hard you just cut a tiny piece of heat shrink tube and slip over the eye of the jig. Then when you heat jig it shrinks, you paint jig then pull the tube off leaving a clean eye. Depends on the size of jig but usually I use 1/16" tube.

I like using tin foil to cover the eyes before I dip them. Cut some 1/4-1/2 inch strips of tin foil and just tear off a piece about an inch or so long and pinch it over/around the eye.

I use hemostats to hold and cover eye of hook, works great.
Yes the most important thing is to fluff the paint and dip the head with a swirling motion for 1/2 a second. I also use my hands instead of a hemostat to dip the heads in the paint. It gives me alot more control. Everyone has a specific way they do it. To the OP, those jigs look fine. Your off to a great start.
I know this started as a classified. But it has become a learning tool . So I'm moving it to the jig making forum. I will leave a one day redirect. "D"
After painting head stick a needle through the eye. I use my half hitch tool for this. Then set it aside while it cools and paint another one. Repeat. I hold hook with hemostats at the bend, heat head and shake/dip head into paint, then needle through hook eye. I could paint 150 jigs in an hour this way. Lot's of different ways to paint jigs, key is finding what works best for you.
guy on another board recommended these to me and I love them for cleaning out eyes!!! Attachment 480475Attachment 480476
Are you using a fluid pet or dipping into the jar?
Don't do it yourself... It's a slippery slope that will cost you a small fortune in thw long run. You'll start with pink by the time you are done you'll have every color under tthe sun. :Rofl
Fatman, what do you call those things?!?
LOL...I built 6 fluid beds yesterday. Problem now is I only have 3 different colors! Hmmm......:yikes:biggrin
I did a fluid bed - PVC pipe, coffee filter, air pump. Have about 10-12 diff colors.
Use candle for initial heating, then use dedicated toaster over to bake the finish. Once it is baked on, won't come off.
For bullets, most folks use a coffee can and shake em, it creates static electricity and the epoxy sticks. The toaster oven them.
Those are towel clamps. A surgery tool.
