Now just gotta wait for the kroil oil to do it thing. Can’t get the flywheel off till it does. Even with puller and impact gun, don’t wanna separate!
Then gonna do even more separation and see how this bottom end is, or in this case, the side end! lol

I'm assuming you hit the puller bolt square with a hammer while under tension. Not so hard it will dislodge the magnets but all of us has to do that. I will startle you when it pops free.

Yes I did hit it, then this happened!
I got a heavy duty puller coming via the jungle company. Hopefully better bolts.

I only use Grade 8 bolts, I have never had that happen. Sorry for your difficulties, the broken bolt should be easy to back out with a left handed drill bit. The Flywheels are very hard to get off, I use lots of HP grease on the puller threads and ring the puller bolt with a hammer several times before a Flywheel I just installed will come back off. When they pop sometimes they will clear the block, I put bungees over the top now.
Yep, the broken bolt came out real easy. I wanted to get this done so I went to the local auto store and bought the only one they had. When I went back, I asked for grade 8 bolts and they said the "no gots"! I got my money back on the one I broke and say "see ya". Ordered another one online. Now I gots to wait!Quote:

I too learned the hard way on a GEO flywheel with grade 5s swapping. Drilled em out.
A little heat and then some kroil will break a lot of stuff loose
Can't heat the Flywheel, the magnets are epoxy glued only on the inside. Sling a magnet - buy a new flywheel. The old Looper OMC Engines, especially the V-6 engines were notorious for slinging magnets. How I have the Snap-on Puller I have today and a massive Strap Wrench just for those old flywheels.Quote:

Slab, on the grade 8 bolts you might try Lowes, Home Depot, etc. In the slide drawer cabnet they have a wide array of grade 8 bolts, Washers, etc.

I'm about to go to town on this flywheel! Wonder how much a new one costs. Maybe I look it up before I do!!!

What are you using to crank down the puller? I have found an impact wrench helps.
I Don't know about Kroil. I usually us PB blaster...May have to soak over night to penetrate enough...Don't know...
IMHO Kroil oil is slightly better then PB blaster. And I love PB Blaster.Quote:

I'm going to weigh the hammer I use and post it in a few. It puts a whack on the puller. They do not come off as easy as one would think.

Now I ring the Puller Bolt pretty good sometimes 40-50 times before the Flywheels will Pop. When they do the more stubborn they are the more they want to fly. Best of Luck Bud, if you were closer I would pull it for you.
I should add, when they Pop it's always a surprise to Me.

Mines bigger (64 oz). But I didn’t whack but a few times. Not no 40-50. Still, I need a new puller, broke two already. I’ll whack it more on the next round!

No substitute for a large hammer. Makes for a satisfying thump when it connects
Respectfully speaking, we called it "Warm it Up" in the oil field. Shock it what loosens the Taper. If you hit it with the sledge you may damage the Thrust Bearings on the Crank. I think they are pressed on, you can check the manual I sent to be sure. Also the Block itself can be damaged. I hope you're just pulling my leg with that Mall.
Believe me, I'm not hitting it full force. I'm trying not to damage anything. I started out with your size hammer, but I didn't think to hit it 40 times, I figured one reasonably good snap with the mall would do it, but it has not worked yet. Gotta get a better puller IMHO, one where bolts don't break and threads don't strip.Quote:

Yes, great. Thank you. I couldn't focus to stick steel to Crappie all day today thinking about my imagined sight of that blue handle swinging a full arc onto the top of your puller. One thing you are learning here Slab is how to get a Outboard Flywheel off. Even a little 40Hp is this much of a pain to pull but once you ring one with a hammer and see it Pop you will know what to expect in the future. The bigger engines like a 250-300Hp are a bit harder, higher initial torque on the Flywheel installation. Bon Temps is getting schooled by me on deep hole crappie fishing in the Swamp today so I will be un-plugged from Crappie.com all day. Hopefully he will have a good post for Crappie.com afterwards.

That video is not when it came off. I got tired of trying to film and remove the flywheel, so I put the camera down. I was frustrated, I thought I had smacked and impacted this flywheel to death. I was just about to give up before I tried the impact on it one more time. The impact had seemingly stopped doing any turning of the bolt for a while now, but I still tried more. And then it came, an unclimactic ping, a nothing burger, but it was done. She gave up the ghost, the flywheel was free. Whew, and now I take a break, to post this update, then I get to tear her down some more, yay me! lol
