Possum prop spins & more
These prop spins are 1/8 and 3/32 tied with possum hair and flash. The nickle heads in second picture weigh in at .08. They are some clear water specials. I made these for a guy that uses Livescope and think they will be killers. Duck jigs are 1/48 with #8 sickles, restocking that size for my box.Attachment 473881Attachment 473882Attachment 473882Attachment 473882Attachment 473883

Possum fur has great action and color. Saw my first one in the yard this morning. They get a pass now that I found out they eat ticks.
-
Excellent work as always.

Like road kill specials, even if I didn't get it off the road. Bought several skins several years ago. Possum has black, white, transparent and translucent hair and is easy to dye.

Hmm Iffn I trap one I’ll have to skin it out…

Something to consider about possums. They are tough.
While riding the school bus, we smelt something horrible. My buddy and I made plans to meet up after we got dropped off, and bring our BB guns. Well we followed our noses closer, closer, until we came into sight of a large white cow covered in buzzards. Wasn’t long and the buzzards took flight. We decided to test our spirits and get even closer. The smell was off the charts crazy. Then we noticed that the cow was moving. Oh Gawd, something is up in there. Just then the possum crawled out of the cow’s butt, covered in slimy goo and began hissing at us. We shot and chased that thing for a long ways. It finally escaped. I will never forget how that possum looked as he exited that cow. Possum Tough.
Few animals we encounter are as prehistoric, or adaptable. They eat fruit, meat, insects, carrion, trash, whatever they come across, it is probably quite delicious to an old possum. They can take an arrow straight through, and waddle off. Possum Tough.
One night I was awakened by my cat squalling. I kept his food out in my Florida Room. I switched on the light and there he was. A huge possum eating the cat food. He had shoved the dryer vent back inside and came in through the hole he made. I grabbed my BB gun and he moved over to the window sill. I pumped it one time and POP…..he hissed. I gave it two pumps- POP…… he hissed. Three pumps- POP…he hissed. Then I grabbed the broom and SWAT……cleaned him right off the shelf, only now he is on the floor and trying to bite my toes. I screamed like a little girl and started shoving at him with that broom. Finally I backed my way back inside and slammed the door. Told the cat he was on his own with that one and went back to bed never to hear from him again. Possum Tough.
I used to surf fish and used double dropper rigs. I would come home and hang them from the rafters of my front porch to let them dry and work out any kinks and such. Well one day I did that but had left little tidbits of bait on the hooks. Next morning I came out and there he was, spread eagled. Hanging there with a circle hook in each foot. All splayed out, with this look of total disgust on his face. He communicated with me using his eyes. He said -Do something man. No way I was gonna try to pull those hooks, so I apologized to him, then shot him. He got to keep those rigs, too. Possum Tough.
I just want to make sure you guys are aware of what you are dealing with here. Talk of road kill and maybe someone thinks they are gonna trap them one. They are vicious and ferocious and have a mouth lined full with teeth covered in horrible bacterial colonies just waiting to maul you but good. Horrible wound if he gets you. Remember to wash your hands real good after playing with his flowing fur, and good luck. Possum Tough.
Nice jigs Jim….

Micanopy, I pictured that possum trying to bite your toes and had a good laugh. They are very tough for sure. My boxer got a hold of one a few years ago and skinned him from the neck all the way to it's feet shaking it like a rag doll. It was still alive and trying to crawl away. Had to drag Toby in the house and used a hammer to put possum out of it's misery. Several whacks to the head to finish it off. It went into the trash.

Boy here in the south looks like we found a way to use up all the road kill possums, now help us figure out what to do with the armadillos.

JJ!, your creativity and work are an inspiration to me. I have started using opossum hair on some jigs and love it's action. I have also started tying "duck" jigs based on your models and I've had good luck on crappies with them and an occasional walleye. Again, thanks for sharing.
