Jig technique and types of jigs?

Is there any technique that should never be used with a type of jig (the two never go together)? Target fish: crappie and panfish.

Ways I’ve fished jigs: under a float, cast and retrieve, cast and retrieve while pausing, cast and retrieve while twitching and cast and retrieve while bouncing the jig off the bottom.

Types of jigs I’ve used or wanna use: tube jigs, curly tail jigs, paddle tail jigs, straight tail jigs, tied feather type jigs and marabou jigs.

there comes a time when every jig gets used for another purpose than the originally designed purpose .
road runners straight up and down in timber along the tree can be quite deadly and for sure not designed to presented that way ....:cheers2

Throw it out and just let it fall back to you with no movement or hold it as still as possible are my favorite. Now with livescope I've learned they really don't like it when it's right above their head and you raise it away from them..............

Doubt there is a wrong way or I would have learned it by now! :Rofl

Thanks for the replies. What sparked my question is my son: He wanted to put a little paddle tail jig under a float, I don’t wanna discourage him from trying different things but also don’t wanna have him trying something that’s a waste of time.

I personally look at lures like paddle tail, curly tails and straight tail like they should be swimming and not suspended under a float, but I like how we walk down the isles in the store and he points out types of jigs that he wants to try. However right now he’s stuck on that float and doesn’t wanna give it up. I hope exposing him to the roadrunner will get more open to fishing without a float.

Sounds like he has developed a "visual" fixation on the float telling him he has a bite, as opposed to "feel" or even "sight of line movement". I'd let him try the paddletail under a float, and have him reel the float in a foot or so every now & then. If that doesn't produce, let him decide on what other type of jig he wants to use as a Plan B. I'd let him know that, okay ... that didn't work "this time", but maybe it will "next time"... but we need to always have a Plan B, in the event it doesn't.

You might also fish right alongside him, throwing a Road Runner. If his method isn't working & yours is, he might want to "get like you" .... I know that works with my fishing buddies :Rofl

I agree with him being fixated on the float, he’s had lots of success with it (small fish but for him it’s still fish) so there’s that. He’s wanting to try the road runner because he’s seen me catch a couple nice fish on it and that got him excited to try it. He’s also very simple in the aspect of if something doesn’t go together he will accept it and not get upset but if I learn later that I was wrong getting him to change back can be tough lol. With all things in life I try to give him the best advice possible.

Im thinking if we can get on a good bite and he gets the feel for a roadrunner type lure he’s gonna be hooked!

I like a feather jig under a float, fox and rabbit hair too. You just can’t hold ‘em still. When he starts in on a school that thumps his jig almost every cast he may get away from the float. Like Ketchn said, they all have a time and place. When he’s using the float and you’re casting and wearing them out may also change his mind.

Good advice - really nice to hear a youngster taking up fishing!

The technique I use is usually whatever the last resort is to get them to bite right after I get tired of catching nothing and get ready to pack it up then take it to the house LOL

How many rods does your area allow per person? I've done the float on one rod in the water while casting a jig with the other. Allows me to miss two fish at the same time :fish Although I do get lucky sometimes and hook one.

Don’t think there’s a limit. He has 2 rods: both had floats but he had me change one to a roadrunner, he tossed it out a couple times but stresses that he won’t know when he has a fish on (I tell him he will know). One of the big issues with high functioning autism is anxiety so I personally think him fishing with two poles will stress him. This last year he’s come a long way, his school, riding bikes and fishing have improved leaps and bounds. I’ve learned when he struggles with learning something new to back off and give him a little more time.

I think it is great that he is thinking about how he is fishing and not just tossing stuff out there because someone told him to do it a certain way. I believe virtually every jig in your tackle box can be fished several ways and you shouldn't be sold on a single technique for a certain jig type. I have always subscribed to the advice that if what you're doing isn't working do something else.
