The Drum of the day

Why not , poor things get no press , not much in the fight dept. lb. for lb. but nonetheless, pretty fun to play with when they hit the jig .
Chances of landing one are very high since those drum lips are vulcanized rubber , you stick a jig in one's lips and unless you play the cards wrong you will most likely, land it .....:highfive
Sure thump hard when they take the bait and feel lovely on an ultralight , plus being not the brightest candles out there, they rarely seek cover when hooked .
So in an attempt to help out it's image, here we go ....

Long ago when I mainly fished with one rod in hand - I do remember enjoying the fights with them [emoji1303]
A big one on light spinning gear was really entertaining. A doctor I knew, a very good, even pro level bass fisherman - he told me that a certain time of the year they would go in the tailwaters of Pickwick and catch them non-stop on light tackle. One after another till your arms got tired. Wish I had tagged along on one of those trips but never did.

How many have eaten freshwater drum? I have eaten a few, although not as good as crappie or bass, but it is good on its own way.

Way better than striped fish for sure , had a Puerto Rican gf cook up some fresh off the hoof “ drum almondine “ one time about 50 years ago , that fish dish is still on my mind , just wow was it good …:highfive

Back when , after it rained and the river ran fast and muddy , solid 3 to 4 lb drum were the ketch of the day in numbers , some shrimp and here we go ….:cheers2

A couple of Ky Lake’s finest that are still swimming. One was on an Off Shore planer board and a custom Pico crank. The other was on a stock Pico, Beachball. Heck of a tussel when hooked and reeled in with the boat moving at 1.7mph!

Hate hooking into them with the UL gear I use. Caught a ton of these at Nickajack and Center Hill. All on 2 or 3 pound test line and UL rods. For whatever the reason they love a Trout Magnet.

I went many years without ever catching one and then around 2015 I caught like eight of them on one year. None were as big as the one you boys are showing but they were fun to catch.

A lake Palestine grand slam is a crappie , ditch pickle , catfish , striped fish , and a gaspergoo. on the same day. Extra credit if they all come on the same bait.

The fresh water drum gets no respect , unlike his saltwater cousins , the red and black drum.
