My first food plot

Tried my hand at planting a food plot for deer the first time this year. I have no access to a tractor or things like that. Put down a large piece of black plastic after turkey season. Covered it with cinder blocks. See first pic. Left it until yesterday. Went out and pulled it up and sure enough, everything under it was dead just like I wanted. Mostly barren. See second pic. I knew I needed to soften the dirt. So I made a redneck plow out of a pallet and some decking screws. See third pic. I drug the pallet behind my truck but didn’t have much success. So I decided to add weight. After one pass, all the blocks I had stacked on the pallet had bounced off. So, I enlisted my buddy to weigh down the pallet. See fourth pic. Drug him around the field for about 30 minutes or so. Then spread the seed and replaced the makeshift fence I had made. I’ve got high hopes that this will help add venison to the freezer come fall. I’ve read reviews that say this seed will sprout within a week and be knee high in 6 weeks, which is right around the crossbow opener for Kentucky. Hope it works as well as it sounds in my head!

Always exciting to see your food plot sprout. I have a small mantis tiller that I prep my plot with. What type of seed are you using?

Nice. I usually plant rye. Cheap and grows well in my poor soil. This year I planted Big Tine No Till.

we try about everything you can imagine here , one year I made a mix from the local seed dealer for my buddy , he tilled it by hand with a garden tiller ,the area half the size of yours by hand , he fenced it off and put the seed down and a bag of triple 13 on it .....
it looked like a green glowing super salad in just a few weeks and .....
SHOT the biggest buck he ever got over it and hung it on his wall ....
food plots work ....just saying :highfive
i had another bud do the same thing on his place a few years later and he in fact took the biggest buck of his life off it as well ....:cheers2
wishing you luck for sure , rain is key along with fertilizer and to be VERY sure ....
if you can get a bag of Turner seed winter deer plot mix sent to you .....
it by far trumps the store brands ,,,by like 27 miles ....just saying
the mix I made was a copy cat of their mix , 16 varieties of different seeds and to be sure of this ...
deer go right out bananas over it when they locate it ....

Being my first plot, I don’t know how often it needs to be getting water? I planted on Saturday, it rained Sunday, and we had a downpour Monday. I know it’s good for a few days, but do I need to water it if we don’t get any more rain by the time I check it Saturday?

You should be fine. We always to try to plant the day before a good rain and never had any trouble after that. Our big deer very rarely use food plots during the day. Plenty of doe, yearling and smaller bucks though. Those old big ones are smart in our area. I will say patience pays off. This is the biggest deer I ever killed in a plot a few year's ago. Pre rut and there were 6 doe, 2 yearlings and a few smaller bucks in there. It was pouring rain and I was fixing to shoot a big doe, then he popped out. He figured enough time had passed so he was safe. I'm glad I was patience I watched the others for 15 minutes.

My motto is if you have doe you will definitely have bucks. They unfortunately stand by our motto, women and children first! Only on their side of the coin it means let them be the first to die, I'm going to hang back a bit... food plots are great feeding areas especially if a poor acorn crop. Fill the freezer first though. I'm a meat hunter first and foremost.. Good luck this season!

it might be a bit early in the ground depending on what you put down , in these parts we try for after labor day up to about October for the most part . as long as it gets a bit of rain and you hit it with fertilizer when you put it down and the bugs dont eat it all up and or the hogs tear it up , it should be good ....maybe .....
farming is tough gig my friend, mother nature is sometimes a beast and then ....
the dang neighbors cows find it and mow it down and trample it and poop it to the ground ....been there done that as well ....
ON my BEST ever food plot ....:banghead

Our target date here is August 1st. Gives the fresh growth a chance to mature and last until snow.
