Looking for a large duck hunting boat for the river with a big tiller steer motor on it. These guys use these on the MS for catching sturgeon for caviar. I can't for the life of me find a big boat like this that can handle a 150hp tiller steer motor. Attachment 466808

No these are commercial fishing boats used on the MS river. I'm going to contact a few fisherman tomorrow. They may make me buy some caviar to get any info. Not sure what I would do with that stuff [emoji23]Quote:

Mine will be an 1856 but they have em over 20 with I think 72 inch bottoms. Hated to steal the owners paint scheme but I liked it a lot. Should be ready in 6 weeks. Might be worthwhile to check with these folks. They are duck boat people and I think not too far from you.

Clark Boat in Bellevue Iowa makes a lot of plate commercial boats. Guys around here run some with 250-300hp tillers for duck hunting.

Sounds like it’s gonna be made out of super thick aluminum and will need a monster tiller for power. I was surprised to find that the big tillers have something like power steering to keep the tourque from your arm, which couldn’t take the punishment. Wicked tough boat, no doubt. Equally tough on the wallet.
I’ve been a fan of big tillers for a long time, though of the pointier-nose variety. Had my heart set at one time on a big Lund with a 250 tiller. But have come to realize I spend a lot more time forward trolling than back. And most of the big tiller walleye rigs have a big command center box right in one of the corners I spend a lot of time standing in.

I agree it would not be an ideal fishing boat for what we do. More geared to commercial fishing and really to large for most our local fishermen here. (Although J White being on pickwick may be ideal over there for commercial use). I've looked at several center consoles, tillers and side consoles. I know plenty hunt the river in 16 to 18 foot boats with 50 to 90 hp tillers. I just would want a much bigger and more stable boat. I also probably add a kicker just in case. Several cons to a boat that size, can't get into real shallow backwaters, a lot more to hide for hunting and not easy to maneuver through narrow creeks or canals. I already have a couple of fishing boats. Looking for a big stable hunting boat. With hybrids or multi purpose boats you always loose benefits one way or the other. I started to order an Avid 21FS CC bay boat. Really nice boat but after thinking on it would be a much better fishing boat than a duck hunting vessel.

We see a lot of these boats on Kentucky Lake. The Asian carp fishermen use them when netting the carp.
Check on what the bowfishermen use. SHALLOW draft, maybe a tunnel hull. Some are pushing 80" wide.
A lot of the commercial boats here in western Kentucky have that distinctive gunwale design.
commercial rigs are made for what they intend to do with them , bet they cost a big greenback plus some is me .....
You could build a blind on it too. Also you can consider a pontoon.
Haven’t read all of the replies, but it could be a custom build boat. I see a decent number of boats on the water in south Louisiana that are custom built for their specific needs, your pictured type included.
I plan to have a blind in whatever I go with no doubt. Heck in a monster like that you could have 3 or 4 guys a dog, decoys and even room to cook breakfast! Don't like the idea of a pontoon on the MS river. Too wide and easily blown around.Quote:

Oquawka or Clark boats is what those are in my neck of the woods in Eastern IA on the Mississippi River. They are built to order. Do see them for sale off and on around here.
Wish my tiller had power steering and it is only 50hp but made from .125 aluminum. 1856 size too. Merc 50hp command thrust.
