WHOA!!!! Tow vehicles are outasight!!!!

Had a buddy looking to replace his ford with 300, 000 miles on it. He said a f150 with 100,000 miles was running $30,000.00. Ouch. Got me looking at new ones. Their proud of them, 55,000.00 to 80,000.00 easily. Glad I got dibs on wifeys 2020 Tahoe z71. It’s got locking rear differential and 4 wheel drive. I looked it up. It’s still nada in upper 40’s . Cra Cra. She’ll trade up in 3-5 years and I’ll get a used vehicle I know the history on. Should do fine with 5.3 v8. We bought a 10 year 150000 mile warranty with it also. So a little piece of mind comes with it. She works 5 miles from house. So it’s a 15000 mile a year vehicle. Probally have 100,000 miles when I get it. May be my last vehicle.

Yep they’re outta sight. Last one we bought was a rebuilt title. Damage to drivers door the extent of it. A reputable place will show pics before repairs. Save about 25% over one with a squeaky clean title around here.

Yep new truck prices are outrageous. I got lucky and bought my truck right before the pandemic. I could sell it now and make a hefty profit. I feel sorry for anyone who is currently in the market. I pray to god I get ten years out of my current truck.

Between gas jumping 30 cents a gallon this week around here. Vehicle prices. And interest rates. Imma sticking to a banana for breakfast. Protein shake for lunch. And homemade salad for supper. Lol.

With food menu displayed. DSJ don’t be tempting me with those restaurants type food displays. Lol.

I was going to buy a new Super Duty this spring but Ford wanted $55K for a stripped one. I will keep rebuilding the 3 old tow vehicles I have now. My 2001 HD 2500 Silverado I took down to the block over the winter and replaced everything under the hood except the heads, I reworked them. My 2009 Silverado 1500 Flex (4800# Towing - a real wimp) I had to replace the entire dash ($1000 for the part) Console Lid ($250) and now working on Airbag system. I rebuilt a 24ft CC Boat trailer for a 2006 Expedition 5.4 3 Valve Lemon, drug it home on a flatbed, tore the engine down, replaced all the Lemon parts, a set of new Power-Stop brakes, new injectors, tune up, wires, runs like a top. Oh I replaced the Fan Clutch with one from NAPA, it was no good. Had to go to Ford and Buy a Motorcraft one. If you find your AC kicks out at idle when its real hot outside F-150 or Expedition it's usually the Fan Clutch. That has become "The Fishin' Expedition". I took the roof TV out and made a forward rod holder for the hole left, added 9 rod holders in the ceiling in the back and now I can carry 5 - 9ft jig poles and 4 7ft casting rods in the Ceiling. These new car dealers can bite me. They were taking advantage of good Americans when they had the upper hand. I will keep dragging stuff home.

Although I have a 2018 f150, and a 2016 f250, which I love them both. I'm building the 1996 Jeep XJ (see our blog forum), or should I say rebuilding from scratch. I'm replacing just about every single component. We'll see what it costs me in the end, but it may be less than anything y'all mentioned buying. Stuff's expensive these days, and replacement Jeep parts seem dirt cheap (relatively speaking). I'll itemize what all I bought for this thing when I'm done, and we'll see how much less than a new (or used) vehicle it'll be. Back to why I need another tow vehicle when I got the 150 and the 250. Well, the F150 is wifey's, and the F250 is a long bed crew cab that turns like a school bus (it tows the 5th wheel). So, a Jeep XJ would be perfect to take the Key West to Lake Monroe! Just sayin'

Traded off my Dodge truck last Fall for a new one before they went hybrid this year. Bought a new 2022 Dodge Ram quad cab with a 5.7 hemi off the lot, $38,000 with ~500 miles on it. Bed liner, class III towing package, etc. I guess it's who you know and how to deal with people. I'm at the age now that I'm not going to deal with high mileage trucks anymore - I likes the comfort.

I have a 1986 Dodge Power Ram here. 360 cu in, 4 wheel drive, 4 speed manual (with granny low). Truck is a beast. Even has the plastic ram head mounted on the hood. I parked it 9 years ago here.

I had some of the granny 4 speeds years back, and they are beasts. One was a ‘56 GMC with a 6 cyl that said he I on the engine tag and 4:56 gears. 55 was about top end. Fuel pump went bad and dumped fuel into the crankcase, took the bottom of the motor out. Sold it broken. Good memories.

I saw a used 23 model Chevy 3500 dulley with 33000 miles this evening and it was priced at $77,500. I have been told of bass boats costing over $100,000 now, I hadn’t looked at any but I know that that is way out of my price range. It makes my old 1986 Astro with the 150 Mercury that I have about $5000.00 in look real good. I am semi-retired so I don’t think a new truck or boat is on my to buy list.

I wish i was near you guys in the south, up here in CT (the rust belt) good trucks are hard to come by and only last a few years at best. its scary. was fortunate to snag a pre-covid 2016 F150 before the prices went crazy but it will need to be replaced soon. as far as the granny low trucks my current summer vehicle is a 1973 International 1210 4x4 pickup (single wheel). Ex fire truck with only 11000 miles on it, with in my world is a brand new truck! I love them old cast iron transmissions. back when stuff was built to last, not the disposible we live in now. I would drive it all winter if I didn't live in the salt belt.

'73 IH 1210, 345ci, Dana/Spicer 70 axles. 4.88 gears... she's no speed demon for sure

Have a buddy that rebuilds salvage titles and have had several from him. (Currently 3 and one for over 10 years) Never thought I would own salvage until I seen him work and his shop. You could eat off his shop floor and every tool is put away in it's place every single time. Also he is mostly a parts replacer not fixing things that shouldn't be fixed.

Saved tons of money in the past but since COVID parts are so high and hard to get we didn't really save much on our Explorer ST. Hopefully they are coming back down.

Don't worry, in 10 years we will be pulling our $55,000 flat bottoms with our $100,000 f150s and stopping for a $25 breakfast on the way. Inflation is great [emoji22]

I didnt say new! Used gas vehicles for towing will be a premium when everything else is electric. And i am expecting new vehicles to be in the 150K range with inflation.

It may be a solid investment to stash a new truck in a climate controlled building if someone has the extra cash. But then we will be in a parts war i suppose, as vehicle manufacturers will surely change most parts on the new electric trucks and discontinue gas truck necessary parts to force the changeover.

With the very soon change to all hybrid/electric, it is buying time for anyone who tows. Upgrade soon or you will be caught up in the price hikes. Us up here in the salt belt are screwed either way, our trucks last 5 years before they are falling apart.

Yeah I think all the supply chain craziness is why trucks like we bought end up with rebuilt titles now. Years ago it would’ve just been an insurance repair and kept on going with original owner. Speaking of boat prices, yeah - I haven’t done this in awhile, but the other day I built one on Lunds webpage to my liking.

And of course that was not a dolled up luxury model. Just a big water boat with maxed out hp.

I am currently restoring a 2002 Toyota 4 runner with the 3.4 V6 engine. It is perfect with rust free frame and 8 out of 10 body and interior.
Runs great and doesn’t burn any oil.
Almost 302k miles.
Already put on Nitto tires, rear shocks, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, new spark plugs with wires, coil packs, fuel injectors, fluid change on every component. Cooling system flush.
Gonna pull the heads this week and local machine shop rebuilding them for me
After that who knows.
I prefer the 3rd generation over other the new ones.
Wife says to just go buy a new one but I can’t justify the cost and probably couldn’t even change the oil on new models. Lol
Good luck with whatever you end up with.
I probably should sell my 7.3 Super Duty F250 but can’t bring myself to do it. It is a Beast. Best diesel engine Ford ever put in a vehicle in my opinion.

Took a picture to show what can be done with scraps. Well I can't count either. 6 9ft holders and 5 7ft holders. I'm over the limit a bit too, inherent problem with my wiring.

I bought a used 2016 F150 in 2018 and it's worth more today than I paid for it.
My son traveled to Montana to buy a 2023 F350 Dually diesel and paid 10K more than factory sticker price. It was teh only one available in teh US that meet his requirements. He traded a F350 XL dually for the Lariat F350 Dually.

I've been looking at new F150 and 250's. I'll be upgrading in a few years. I double tow my camper and boat behind the truck. We talked about upgrading the camper too. But we are satisfied with our current camper and will keep it. This winter I'll replace the cabinets and make them more functional...

The Tahoe sounds like a good one for towing and sporting around town. For woods and towing I have a 2005 F150. I bought it new Jan 2006, got a good deal on it ..$29,500 since it was a left over from 2005. Its a 4x4, 4 door, 5.4L engine, Lariat package, leather seats, Automatic trans. 3 years ago I looked at new trucks. I did have some sticker shock..I really like the truck and its in really good shape other than scratches from the woods and faded roof paint. 3 years ago The truck had over 220,000 miles on original engine and transmission. The cams were making noise and setting the knock sensors off. Since the truck had zero rust or dents I decided to fix it up.. I had transmission rebuilt, bought a re-manufactured engine with a 3 year warranty, bought new radiator, water pump, hoses, belt, etc. Then I had a new A/C installed. I had local mechanics do the work, almost $9000. For me it was worth it.. no rust since its never been on a salt road or beach. I had the front end rebuilt 5 years ago. I bought a Tacoma 4x4 Sport for a daily driver Feb of 2022, it should be able to pull my skiff but I hope I never have to find out.

If I was younger man I would open a business that rebuilds trucks/cars too like new condition. New suspension, transmission, motor etc. I suspect it would be much cheaper than buying new. I think it would be a huge money maker (anyone who steals this idea owes me 10% of total sales).

The 5VZ-FE is a great motor. You will get a lifetime out of that thing if maintained properly. I had a first gen tundra (2001) with the 4.7 V8 in it and it had a solid 300k put on it and it's still driving today, I don't expect it to go down for another 20 years.

My 2002 Tundra has 217000 miles runs and drives great. My wifes car is 2016 4Runner Limited with 43000 miles. I was talking to a guy who was from Afganistan who owns a 4Runner and I said these things will go 250000 or 300000 miles easy. he said you Americans make me laugh, overseas 4Runners go 600000 or 700000 miles they don't break.

They break... They just keep repairing them because they do not have a car lot on every corner. No engine is going 600,000 miles without rebuild, not even semi trucks that end up over a million but especially not a 4runner in sandy Afghanistan.

You are correct. I spent 21 years living and working in Saudi. Traveled all over the Arabian peninsula and Africa. Vehicles in those climates take a beating, requiring lots of maintenance. We had em all, and we had a huge budget to maintain them. Each new contact, which came in 3-4 years intervals, new vehicles were purchased. GM, Ford, Toyota, we had em all. None were really better than the other. I can tell you from experience I didn’t want a vehicle with 100,000 miles on it carrying me to a site call at remote site. The dust in that part of the world is as fine as talcum powder. The locals in that part of the world just keep repairing them. Toyotas are just easier to come by in that part of the world and that is why there are so many there.

By the time my truck reaches 40000 miles it will be over 10 years old. It has 25000 now and it is 7 years old. Still on original tires. Walmart trips mostly.

that’s a big ten fo on the dust. We rode glamis 8 days. With the fine dust it will cut your eyes with no sealed googles. Clean air filters or replace every day. Lotta maintenance in those conditions.

My new (in 2019) truck and new (last year) 19' CC boat together costs less than the large tricked out trucks today. They're the price of an older house!

The truck I drive is a 2019 ford regular cab long bed. I purchased it new in 19 for 25,500.00. Plus tax. Things have changed.
